In the gnome that came with Suse 7.3 there was a menu option to change the windomanager; I am unable to find it in suse 8.1. Where is it, or how can I change it? -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

In GNOME2, it's stored as a GConf value, so start the GConf editor (Applications -> System Tools -> Configuration Editor), and navigate to: /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager And change the value of 'default' to whatever you want it to be (eg sawfish) This change will take effect the next time you log into GNOME. Or, if you want it to take effect immediately, run the following at a command line: killall -9 VALUE1 ; sleep 2s ; VALUE2 Where VALUE1 is what 'default' was set to originally, and VALUE2 is what you changed it to. -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.1) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org

Doesn't work... I had previously tried with the 'current' setting, and it didn't work.
Or, if you want it to take effect immediately, run the following at a command line:
killall -9 VALUE1 ; sleep 2s ; VALUE2
Where VALUE1 is what 'default' was set to originally, and VALUE2 is what you changed it to.
Doesn't work, either: metacity does not die, and sawfish says that I can only have one window manager :-( cer@nimrodel:~> killall -9 metacity ; sleep 2 ; sawfish You may only run one window manager cer@nimrodel:~> There is a flash, and metacity is restarted inmediately. Hold on.. without the sleep, on a terminal, it does work: killall -9 metacity ; sawfish & Then, exiting the sesion with save, and login in again, and the change remains! Thank you! :-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

<snip><snip><snip><snip><snip><snip><snip> I think Gnome has to be installed from Yast. An option to use Gonme as WM will then be made availble in the main login screen. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I said window manager, not session type. :-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Take a look in /etc/sysconfig and do a "grep WINDOWMANAGER *" At least that works when edited in 8.0 /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager. When finished remember to run "SuSEconfig" -- 73 de Donn Washburn __ " http://www.hal-pc.org/~n5xwb " Ham Callsign N5XWB / / __ __ __ __ __ __ __ 307 Savoy St. / /__ / / / \/ / / /_/ / \ \/ / Sugar Land, TX 77478 /_____/ /_/ /_/\__/ /_____/ /_/\_\ LL# 1.281.242.3256 a MSDOS Virus "Free Zone" OS Email: n5xwb@hal-pc.org Info: http://www.knoppix.com
