Suse 9.3/Xorg support for WUXGA 1620x1200 LCD
Hello everyone, For CAD/CAM purpose, I'm assessing a Dell Ultrasharp 2405FPW monitor, which is a 24" WUXGA 1620x1200 LCD. I have seen some discussions about Linux issues on the web, and I am not sure if it will work properly. I searched Suse's hardware database, but didn't find support for widescreen LCDs from Dell, model 2005FPW or 2405FPW. Dell has created a list of video card support (on Windows I expect) for this widescreen LCD: http://www1.us.dell.com/content/learnmore/learnmore.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&%7Eid=monitors&%7Eline=desktops&%7Emode=popup&%7Eseries=optix&%7Etab=other Any suggestions regarding proper video card and possibly knowledge or expectiations of Suse 9.3/Xorg support for this wide LCD are welcome. Rgds, Terje J. Hanssen
I have a widescreen Laptop. I was able to configure it for use with Xorg If I remember correctly there were 2 issues. 1.) getting the proper resolution Took getting proper modes defined for that resolution. 2.) getting a square dpi (e.g. 92x92, as apposed to defaulted wide pixel 96x92) Took getting the proper modline for the desired resolution. With the newer (haven't tried the latest, once I got 629 driver working, I stopped messing) nvidia drivers, there is better monitor polling. I forget the actual keywords. Needed to pass a parameter in XF86Config telling it to ignore the reported modes and use the ones I specified. This may be better supported under 9.3 as well as 7167 if you use nvidia card Hope this gives a good starting point. B-) On Tuesday 26 April 2005 12:20 pm, Terje J. Hanssen wrote:

Brad, Thank you for sharing your experience. I would guess your widescreen was 1600x1200, althoug I am not sure if 1620x1200 will be more difficult to get to work. Without studying all available resolution specs, I myself have also supposed to buy a new opteron (dual kernel) based workstation with *NVIDIA Quadro FX 500* (entry level 3D), supposing it will support 1620x1200. an unstandard resolution is an unstandard resolution. I wouldn't think there is any difference barring being able to find someone else who has already done the calculations to come up with the proper mode & modeline in google. Mine is 1200x800 NOT 1280x800 like seems more common in wide screens. In fact, if you use http://www.google.com/search?q=1280x800+XF86Config+modeline&btnG=Search&hl=en&lr=lang_en&safe=off&c2coff=1 or http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=lang_en&safe=off&c2coff=1&q=site%3Alists.suse.com+1280x800+XF86Config+modeline&btnG=Search as a base to find out how to tweak like I did, you may see what you need. B-)
Error Correction!!! Sorry, my typo (again). The Dell Ultrasharp 2405FPW LCD monitor is of course a 24" standard WUXGA "1920"x1200 LCD, not "1620"x1200 as I uncorrectly wrote in the subject and body of my initital mail. Sorry if this error has brought some confusion, and hope this is a clarification. Terje J. Hanssen

Configure the monitor with "sax2". There, check if your monitor is already recognized correctly. I do not see a Dell 2405 there, but it might be an OEM model, and there under a different name. If not, choose LCD as a monitor type, and check if it already offers your resolution of 1920x1200 (it does so under SuSE 9.3). If not, there is somewhere the "advanced" option to add resolutions. Add yours, and sax2 will calculate all for you, and configure. But before saving it, it will allow you to test it, so you see immediately if it works, before you save. With LCDs there are usually no problems, I had this way my widescreen 1280 x 800 configured, in SuSE 9.2. As said before, SuSE 9.3 already includes 1280 x 800 LCD, and also your resolution 1920x1200. It recognizes and configures my 1280 x 800 for X / KDE correctly, so it might also automagically configure your 1920x1200 LCD. HTH, Matt

I also veryfied with Yast2/SaX2 that Dell 2405FPW was not on the list. (I've also seen someone told it is a TFT display with a Samsung PVA panel, but I have not model).

LCD 1920x1200@75HZ is found on the list, not 1929x1200@60HZ VESA 1920x1440@75HZ and 60HZ are also on the list.

I'm not sure where the advanced option is, but I looked under Select diagonal and Aspect ratio, but there was 21 IN the maximum screen size.

Well, I hope so, but I don't think so, as I couldn't find 1920x1200@60HZ on the list using Yast2/SaX2. As I haven't this display yet (currently ca. 2 months delievering time from Dell on this model). Terje

Are you sure that it does not accept 1920x1200@75HZ ? It might display with 60 Hz, but as input (which gets changed from analog to digital anyway) I think it accepts 75 Hz. The LCD technology is different from the tube monitor technology, where you risk frying it if you give it too much.

No, not there. Start sax2, then: Desktop->Color and Resolution->Properties->Expert, "add user defined resolution". Enter your X and Y values, such as 1920 and 1200. After entering my weird resolution here, I could select it for the graphics card and the monitor in their windows. HTH, Matt

How interesting that you should ask just now. I spent several hours yesterday getting my new ViewSonic VP201b installed, configured and all the various font settings reset to suit it. Basically, everything went pretty smoothly. The "Reprobe" button in YaST's "Graphics card and monitor" (YaST2 Hardware) properly detected the make and model of the monitor. I had to manually configure the 1600x1200 32-bit (or maybe it was 24) color. I also narrowed the range of vertical scan frequencies to reflect the recommended scan frequency for this display. After confirming the new monitor configuration, I experienced the symptom in which the display manager is switched from kdm to xdm. The same fix specified for the bug when it occurs in the 9.2 -> 9.3 upgrade fixes this instance. I had a well crafted set of font configurations for KDE and various applications that include their own font control options. Absolutely none of it was any good with the WUXA LCD monitor. I spent hours getting it all right, but it was worth it. This is great display.
