Speedtouch USB / pppoa lose connection
I am using a speedtouch USB ADSL modem on SuSE 7.3 (previously on 7.1). All is fine, except that I usually lose the connection after two days. I don't really kno if the problem is due to my provider, to pppd or to something else. This is a bit of a problem since I am running a website with dynamic IP redirection. I would really welcome any hints at what is happening. Thanks. fx This is the message I get when the connection is lost: sent [LCP EchoReq id=0xc8 magic=0x5768f8aa] Apr 22 06:30:39 vertigo pppd[4924]: sent [LCP EchoReq id=0xc9 magic=0x5768f8aa] Apr 22 06:31:09 vertigo pppd[4924]: sent [LCP EchoReq id=0xca magic=0x5768f8aa] Apr 22 06:31:39 vertigo pppd[4924]: No response to 4 echo-requests Apr 22 06:31:39 vertigo pppd[4924]: Serial link appears to be disconnected. It is your provider. Disconnection does happen, but you can minimize it.
Apr 22 06:31:39 vertigo pppd[4924]: No response to 4 echo-requests
Here is what happened. Pppd uses LCP echoes to determine whether the connection is alive and the other end did not reply after 4 echoes (the number that you client is set to) and pppd give up. You might try increasing the number of LCP echoes in your client. I find that by doing that I loose connection less often.
This is a bit of a problem since I am running a website with dynamic IP redirection.
Two things: (1) Might sure that the client you are using in capable of auto-reconnecting. (2) Find a client for you dynamic DNS service that will automatically update the ip. For example I use dyndns.org for dynamic ip and I used ddclient to automatically update the ip. Charles -- "Whip me. Beat me. Make me maintain AIX." (By Stephan Zielinski)

I have tried increasing that to 20. I'll see what it changes. I had tried to leave a terminal open pinging my provider's server every 60 seconds, but that did not change anything.

How do I see that? I couldn't find anything in man pppd

I use No-IP.org, which does the same. Thank you for your help fx -- ______________________ Courtesy of SuSE Linux

Sorry I missed out the first time that you are using PPPOA, I use PPPOE and most PPPOE clients will auto-reconnect. That having been said you can achieve the same results by using netcheck: http://freshmeat.net/projects/net-check/?topic_id=150%2C152 Also, you might want to check out the dsl-howto for additional suggestions.
