Does anyone know how to configure an ethernet alias (ie eth1:0) on SuSE 8.1? You used to be able to do this in yast1 or by editing rc.config but now I can't figure out how to do it. Correct
Help someone, I have a firewall to finish configuring.
http://dinamizm.ath.cx/ethernetproblems.html 8.0 applies to 8.1 also or look at /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg.template -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

Just a thought do you have any wireless cards installed on that machine
This ip alias works happily if I do: # ifconfig eth1:1 y.y.y.17 netmask 255.255.255.240 up Have I got something wrong in the config file?
Looks fine to me maybe try with Wireless="off"
Any help appreciated. This used to be easy :-( Why has it been broken in 8.0/8.1??
Because of of iproute2 utils :-) -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

Yes. But IMHO "upgrades" should not lose functionality :-) No I don't have any wireless cards in the box. Don't even have the wireless package installed (Nor should I need to I would hope) # rpm -qa|grep wire After closer inspection, it seems that the alias interface is actually being brought up, but it is still spitting out this error message. eth1:1 ifup-wireless: interface eth1:1 is not available Can someone from SuSE tell me how to make this go away? I hate needless error messages :-) PS. Togan, feel lke having lunch? Cheers -- Peter Nixon http://www.peternixon.net/ PGP Key: http://www.peternixon.net/public.asc

can you try like this after making sure ifcfg-eth1:1 looks like BOOTPROTO='static' BROADCAST='y.y.y.31' IPADDR='y.y.y.17' NETMASK='255.255.255.240' NETWORK='y.y.y.16' STARTMODE='onboot' and then rcnetwork restart -o type=eth

Nope. No dice. Still the same error. :-( Oh well, I can live with it for now. -- Peter Nixon http://www.peternixon.net/ PGP Key: http://www.peternixon.net/public.asc
