[opensuse] Sound doesn't work when playing dvd
Hi, I don't play many dvd's on my laptop computer so I don't know how long this has been going on. I have installed on this computer Opensuse 11.1 with the 64bit system. I used opensuse community one click install for restricted formats. I can view the video but can't hear any sound when I play a dvd. I redid the one click install after I found the problem, and that didn't fix it. I then updated programs and that still didn't fix it. I have tried several dvd disks to make sure it isn't a problem with the dvd. I also tried to play the dvd on my desktop Opensuse 11.1 system with 32 bit, and the dvd plays fine there. On it, I can hear sound and see video. On the laptop, I opened kmixer to make sure that the appropriate inputs from the dvd were set to allow sound, and they were. I wonder if anyone knows what might be wrong and how to fix it. Thanks -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have a similar problem even when playing mp3 files with Amarok (openSUSE 11.1, 32 bits with KDE4.3). A reboot solves sometimes this issue. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I did try that before I posted originally, but it didn't work to fix the problem. I should have perhaps included it in the steps that I have already tried to fix the problem, but I didn't because the problem seems more involved. when i get this type of problem i play around with different backends (xine, gstreamer), look at phonon and alsasound configuration, enable and disable different things, play aroud with different mixer devices. so far i always got things working eventually. i'm not expert enough to tell you exactly what to do in your situation, without knowing much more about your configuration. but there's a real expert who goes by the name "oldcpu" on the openSUSE forums, who solves most sound problems that come up. you find the forum at this address: <http://forums.opensuse.org/applications/multimedia/> oldcpu may still be on holiday, but i've seen him posting even from wherever he's holidaying. you might want to try over there. -- ys phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You are right, I didn't say that, so let me correct that oversight. I use kde 3 and have tried kaffeine and mplayer to play the dvd. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ok, then I'd recomend you try the original interface for the xine engine, which I think is what kaffeine uses (check it); package xine-ui, commandline "xine". It will give you access to the full configuration of the engine, including sound. Of mplayer I can't comment, I'm not familiar with it. Another think you should check is if you are using pulseaudio: it appears that some people get better results dissabling it. IIRC there is a wiki page explaining how to do it, but it might be as simple as a checkbox in Yast sound configuration module. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Also, If you have upgraded with packages from the pacman repository, then you might have "xinelibs" installed instead of "libxine" (or vice-versa). That in itself can be a cause of problems. When I'm trouble chasing problems like that, I usually disable all repositories except oss and openSuSE Update and force a downgrade of whatever package is giving me problems back to the official version and go from there. 90% of the time that will solve the problem. For the other 10% of the time, you have the correct version installed to author a bug report against. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. 1. Do you you get audio when you try to play other audio and video files? 2. Have you tried to disable pulseaudio? 3. If all else fails, start mplayer with the "-v" switch and post the output. 1. Do you you get audio when you try to play other audio and video files? Yes, I did. I only found the problem when trying to play a dvd.
2. Have you tried to disable pulseaudio?
I tried it in the course of my troubleshooting, but didn't find an easy way to do it when I googled how to do it. So in the course of looking for an easier way to do it in yast, I found the problem. Somehow, the audio board became unconfigured since I installed the operating system months ago. When I auto configured the board, the sound started working when playing dvd's, and had no effect on everything else. I don't know how I could get sound in everything else except dvd's, so I wasn't thinking in that mode when I posted asking for help. I thought since it only occurred with dvd's, it must be a software problem. Thanks for everyone's efforts on my behalf. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
