Hello all, I want to make my home systems so that all files created have no rwx for the "other" group. I have found umask options in a couple of places. Where all do I need to make this change? My wife and I are in a specific group, so I don't want "other" to have any permissions. I have a cable modem and am a little paranoid. Probably most convenient is in .profile and .bashrc: umask 007 / umask 027 Koos Pol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S.C. guess I should have given an example. I have a cron job that backups a data directory and the tar file has the following permissions -rw-r--r-- and I would like to drop the 'other' read. I could just issue a chmod, but I would have to do this for every cron job, I just figured I could change the umask and that would take care of all. Koos Pol wrote:

That's an entire different story indeed. But the logic is still very easy and straightforward: The permissions are kept within in the file. So you need to check on the tool -in this case tar- to see if it allows for on-the-fly file permissions change. So it's back to the manapges... Sometimes people talk awfully complicated on simple matters, don't they? Koos "Complicated" Pol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S.C.
