Hi Patrick (and everyone else). Thanks to both you and Togan. Yes, a "network" install is what i needed to do. The folks at OpenOffice (sorry about the subject line - too much time lying in the floor staring into the bowels of my new computer) ... need to change the setup to reflect what they actually mean ... Hi Folks
It looks like I'm going to have a series of problems with this install ... (However, I have got my Hayes Accura PCI modem working ... if that's of use to anyone).
I've chosen the office install out of the box. (I've never used OpenOffice b4, so apologies if this turns out to be a stupid problem, as I expect it is).
As a user, I click on the OpenOffice.org and it installs the whole thing into my local directory (so we need a whole copy for every user?).
Now when I try and use it, it want to save the file into /opt/OpenOffice.org/work, which doesn't exist. OK, I can create that (but why? what is the point of the directories in my user filesystem?). Saving the file gives errors, and blows awayOpenOffice ... but sometimes actually saves it. Not consistently ...
For example, I can save atext.rtf (with an error message), but then if I try and save atext.sxw ... bang, crash.
Any thoughts gratefully received. I've had a nosey round but the error is so fundamental ... it's bound to be something I've done ..
Cheers, Bryan
------------------------- Bryan, My first thoughts on this is that you have installed it for a local user instead of Workstation setup which it should be. As workstation, it will install as if you have a network and you will be a user of this package. It will install a small set of needed files in your /home directory for the user, but you will be able to save files etc as user too! In fact, staroffice 5.1 was the same. It is documented, but many people don't notice it. They really should make that clear during the install... -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
