You can go to a text console and turn on num lock. As soon as you switch back to the desktop, numlock is turned off again.

Because the default is off. Login as root and run Yast and search for Numlock. I forget where the setting is for changing it to default ON.

I don't think that's adviseable, as I thought we were talking about notebook computers, where you don't want NumLock on by default.
