How do I get my Monitor to suspend? Running nvidia 1.0-6629 GeForce FX 5200 card SuSE 9.2 Monitor is Sony HMD-A440/LXU The following is inside XF86Config: under Section "Monitor" Option "DPMS" and under "ServerLayout" Option "BlankTime" "20" Option "StandbyTime" "30" Option "SuspendTime" "40" Option "OffTime" "60" Inside /var/log/XFree86.0.log I get the warning: (WW) Open APM failed (dev/apm_bios) (No such device) How do I get /dev/apm_bios? When I'm logged out and kdm is waiting for a new login the screen will blank after a while but some time later the kdm login area (along with clock) will show on the screen. The display is somewhat distorted. The next morning I check the monitor and it was still warm and the monitor never went into standby let along suspend. Does anyone know what else I should be configuring to get this system to suspend the monitor or at least send it into standby. If I remember right the monitor use to power down to the point where the monitor was not warm the next morning. This was under SuSE 8.2 Thanks, Terry -- SuSE Linux 9.2 (i586) ---- 2.6.8-24.5-default --- Tue 12/14/04 19:25 7:25pm up 21:41, 3 users, load average: 1.15, 1.20, 1.18

# l /dev/apm_bios crw------- 1 root root 10, 134 2004-10-02 09:38 /dev/apm_bios I get the same message, I don't know if APM needs to be active, I'm using ACPI.

I'm running the same card and driver on 2 boxes, must check that later. Turns out doing l /dev/apm_bios gives me the same results You say you are using ACPI. Can you expand on how you do this? Does this cause you monitor to go into standby or suspend mode? My understanding APM is for laptops and ACPI is for desktops. I have a desktop.

Look in your /etc/X11/XF86Config in the 'monitor' section for: OPTION "DPMS" If it's not there, your not going to get your monitor to suspend. You can use SAX2 or YAST (SAX2) to "enable power management" (or something close to that) or just add the statement. My monitor section is below: Section "Monitor" Option "CalcAlgorithm" "CheckDesktopGeometry" DisplaySize 408 308 HorizSync 30-82 Identifier "Monitor[0]" ModelName "VP201MB" VendorName "VIEWSONIC" Option "DPMS" VertRefresh 50-75 UseModes "Modes[0]" EndSection

I choose that since it was close to the true model "HMD-A440/LXU". Don't think this is the problem. -- SuSE Linux 9.2 (i586) ---- 2.6.8-24.5-default --- Wed 12/15/04 20:40 8:40pm up 22:43, 3 users, load average: 0.39, 0.27, 0.21

Two other things to look for: 1) Look for kaffeine to be in the system tray. I believe if it is running there, it prevents suspend. 2) In control center, make sure your screen saver is 'power management aware'. There is a check box for this.

From the acpi-howto "ACPI is the power specification which is an alternative to APM" and it's supposed to supercede APM, but both are still in the kernel. On my desktop, I only have acpid in /etc/init.d/, but on the laptop both acpid and apmd are there, "chkconfig acpid" returns "on" and "chkconfig apmd" returns "off". You could try enabling the one that is off and disabling the one that is on to see if it works. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer =====LINUX ONLY USED HERE=====
