Cron jobs: how to stop mail notification?
Ok, it's been a while since I did it and I'e re-done my systems since, so my memory is a little faulty. What is it that I need to add to the entry in the crontab to disable mail-notification? I thought it was something like 2>&1, but that might be on AIX. TIA, Geordon

A line in /etc/crontab that says MAILTO=/dev/null should do it.

This just puts error messages and output in the same place. It doesn't have anything in particular to do with cron. Maybe you're thinking of > /dev/null 2>&1 , which sends both error and output to the bitbucket. -tara

That seems like a smart thing to do, but is it? On a single box at home it must be OK? Cheers, ei -- @~~~ EagleIce ~~~~ eagleice@telia.com ~~~~ Running SuSE Linux 7.1 ~~~@ @~ Webmaster http://erin.se ~~~ http://www.inspired-leadership.com ~@

Depends on the system. I don't do it at home, but I know of some production (standalone) servers where it is done. These are generally systems on which cron is not that important. I understood the original question as "how do I stop all cron mail notification" so that's how I answered. -tara

-tara That's how I understood it too, and I was absolutely not criticising your answer if that's what you thought, I thought it was great. I was just wondering if this method is OK to use on my own homebox, if it's *safe*.
