[opensuse] Using Yast with QT GUI
Hi list, Wonder if are there any hopes to have back the QT Yast GUI working in current and next openSUSE releases, as it was before. In my humble opinion the actual Yast GUI (which if I'm not wrong is gtk based) looks uglier in comparison to QT version. Thanks. Nay. Yast is using Ruby and will be using it for the foreseeable future. The process to translate YaST from YCP to Ruby finished successfully, so the project the article talks about ended. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I know the interface is different, obviously, but the options/features _should_ be the same. I use mostly the ncurses interface, I don't often have reason to use the GUI. I couldn't find the automatic update config. Yes, I understand that. But sometimes the updates happen at an inconvenient time. They may cause crashes; a reboot may needed, or at least, a restart of several applications and services, which are not always restarted automatically (and until you do, the machine remains vulnerable). And sometimes the machine fails to reboot successfully. Some updates break things. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Yes, but jdd says differently in his wiki (that he referred to).
No, he says that you need to install "yast2-online-update-configuration".
That's what my message says too, but jdd writes that it's automatically installed for the qt interface, but you need to install it manually for ncurses. Or I am misreading that? "The module name (13.1) is "yast2-online-update-configuration". It's available from software management/config, but only in qt version (not ncurse) with install on the go. With ncurse (xterm) version, install it yourself." AFAICT, one needs to install it manually regardless of which version. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (9.1°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - dedicated server rental in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

no for me '"install on the go" mean that yast ask you to install and if you answer yes do it for you. True for qt, this option do not existe (AFAIK) in ncurse, where one have to go to software, select manually the module and install it. This is not obvious because the module name is confusing jdd -- http://www.dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Aha, now I see what you mean. Still seems like a bug to me, but I can understand if you can't be bothered to report it. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (10.4°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I know the interface is different, obviously, but the options/features _should_ be the same. I use mostly the ncurses interface, I don't often have reason to use the GUI. With yast/software, can you mention an example of a missing option/feature?
No, they are not. Specially on the software module, which has different features and behavior in QT or GTK modules. The ncurses one is similar to the old qt interface of yesteryear. Just fire up the yast software module in QT mode, make a photo, close it, then fire up the ncurses interface. The entire top level line of menus is missing. In the second line, for "view", there is no "view by repository", for instance, to mention one that I use a lot. Here it is labeled "Filter". If you activate that view, then the secondary filter feature is missing, so you can not search for a particular package in the active repo. I then used the option (with packman selected) to update all listed to newer version (in Actions menu). After long thinking, I did not see what it wanted to update. There is no menu entry I can see to display what will YaST actually do when you "accept" - the "installation summary" view in the QT flavour. Some features are there, but on a different place and functionality, like the equivalent to the version tab in QT. Here it is under the view menu. By the way: there is an update to YaST today, something about using the system Ruby when rvm is installed - or something similar, and I don't remember how to get the information about installed security patches as offered by YOU. This might be the OP issue. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Hmm, okay - I really thought the different interfaces provided exactly the same functionality. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (9.3°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - dedicated server rental in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi list,
Wonder if are there any hopes to have back the QT Yast GUI working in current and next openSUSE releases, as it was before.
In my humble opinion the actual Yast GUI (which if I'm not wrong is gtk based) looks uglier in comparison to QT version.
what makes you think than "yast2 --qt" do not work (if installed)?
works for me

Your command starts the ncurses version of Yast interface. Look the error I get by setting Yast WANTED_GUI: https://flic.kr/p/nDz2qn Hope now it being more clear! Ok I resolved now it was missing a the following qt lib: zypper in yast2-qt-pkg Lettura dei dati del repository in corso... Lettura dei pacchetti installati in corso... 'yast2-qt-pkg' non è stato trovato nei nomi dei pacchetti. Si prova per capacità. Risoluzione delle dipendenze dei pacchetti in corso… Il seguente NUOVO pacchetto verrà installato: _libyui-qt-pkg5_ Now WANTED_GUI=qt is working as it was supposed! Strange that I never received dependencies warning when installed yast2-qt pkg. End of transmission...
