[opensuse] 11.0 AMD64 Remote admin can't change keyboard layout
Hi all, I remotely control my computer with VNC... I'm unable to change the keyboard layout for that remote VNC client. I changed the keyboard for the local user to French Canadian, but when I log in with the same user remotely, I get the english keyboard. I tried starting Yast to change the keyboard layout, but when I click on keyboard layout, it doesn't start. Where can I make that change? y2log gives: 2008-07-29 15:23:53 <1> papa-laptop(14885) [qt-wizard] QY2Styler.cc(setStyleSheet):34 set stylesheet style.qss 2008-07-29 15:23:53 <1> papa-laptop(14885) [qt-ui] YQUI_core.cc(initUI):227 Forcing /usr/lib64/libQtGui.so.4 open failed 2008-07-29 15:23:53 <2> papa-laptop(14885) [qt-ui] YQApplication.cc(loadPredefinedQtTranslations):119 Can't load translations for predefined Qt dialogs from /usr/share/qt4/translations/qt_en.qm Thanks -- Gary Baribault Courriel: gary@baribault.net GPG Key: 0x4346F013 GPG Fingerprint: BCE8 2E6B EB39 9B23 6904 1DF4 C4E6 2CF7 4346 F013 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks
I suspect the problem has to do with the difference in "desktop" that is started by VNC. For example, on an 11.0 install using kde3.5 as the desktop, when using vnc, the kde4 desktop is used. This is due to the normal desktop using /opt/kde3/bin/startkde to start the desktop while vnc uses /usr/bin/startkde to launch the vnc desktop giving the kde4 desktop over vnc. To use kde3 over vnc you need to launch /usr/bin/startkde3 in ~/.vnc/xstartup. You control this behavior on the remote machine by editing ~/.vnc/xstartup and changing the desktop start command. For example: 21:32 nirvana~> cat .vnc/xstartup #!/bin/sh xrdb $HOME/.Xresources xsetroot -solid grey xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" & #twm & # Use for basic twm desktop over vnc #startxfce4 & # Use for xfce desktop over vnc /usr/bin/startkde3 & # Use for kde3 desktop over vnc #/usr/bin/startkde & # Use for kde4 desktop over vnc It makes sense that if your keyboard settings apply to desktop "a" say kde3.5 and you are starting desktop "b" like kde4 for vnc that your keyboard settings will be "gone" in the vnc desktop. -- David C.
