[opensuse] Driver 'sd' Needs Updating? for [sda....]
Listmates, Another curiosity are the following dmesg errors related to a 'sd' driver that needs updating. The new 11.0 system seems to run OK, but there does seem to be an occasional read-write head full-swing excursion that has caught my attention. The dmesg output is below with the hwinfo information for the disk drive that follows: Driver 'sd' needs updating: Driver 'sd' needs updating - please use bus_type methods sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] 625142448 512-byte hardware sectors (320073 MB) sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] 625142448 512-byte hardware sectors (320073 MB) sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA 01:53 alchemy~/linux/ati-compiz> sudo hwinfo --disk 31: IDE 200.0: 10600 Disk [Created at block.234] UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_serial_SATA_SAMSUNG_HM320JIS16LJD0PC03486 Unique ID: 3OOL.cnjxKRlyi73 Parent ID: CLZK.2iJtRy_bMBD SysFS ID: /class/block/sda SysFS BusID: 2:0:0:0 SysFS Device Link: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:12.0/host2/target2:0:0/2:0:0:0 Hardware Class: disk Model: "SAMSUNG HM320JI" Vendor: "SAMSUNG" Device: "HM320JI" Revision: "2SS0" Serial ID: "S16LJD0PC03486" Driver: "ahci", "sd" Driver Modules: "ahci" Device File: /dev/sda Device Files: /dev/sda, /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_SAMSUNG_HM320JIS16LJD0PC03486, /dev/disk/by-id/ata-SAMSUNG_HM320JI_S16LJD0PC03486, /dev/disk/by-path/pci-0000:00:12.0-scsi-0:0:0:0, /dev/disk/by-id/edd-int13_dev80 Device Number: block 8:0-8:15 BIOS id: 0x80 Geometry (Logical): CHS 38913/255/63 Size: 625142448 sectors a 512 bytes Geometry (BIOS EDD): CHS 620181/16/63 Size (BIOS EDD): 625142448 sectors Geometry (BIOS Legacy): CHS 1023/255/63 Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Attached to: #24 (SATA controller) Primarily, I have no idea what 'sd' driver should be updated to attempt to correct this issue. Any thoughts from anyone else on how to further diagnose and fix this would be appreciated. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. If that is so, the proper thing to do is open a bugzilla. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I don't think that's the case. All of my machines give that error in openSUSE and Fedora 8. Here's a message from the kernel mailing list:
"Driver 'sd' needs updating - please use bus_type methods"
The warning never appeared in RC6, and all google reveals are other peoples logs that are posted about other issues.
Do I need to fix up something here?
No, you don't. It's harmless, a side effect of:
commit 751bf4d7865e4ced406be93b04c7436d866d3684 Author: James Bottomley
Date: Wed Jan 2 11:14:30 2008 -0600 [SCSI] scsi_sysfs: restore prep_fn when ULD is removed
It would be better to silence this warning.
James, we need to reset prep_fn in each ULD? though it's not nice...
Really not nice ... to the extent that we shouldn't do it. The reset is in exactly the correct place currently. If we make it a requirement of the ULDs its duplication and someone is bound to forget.
It looks like the problem is the warning in base/driver.c:driver_register() apparently it wants an either/or for ->remove methods (either bus type or driver). We're actually using the bus_type methods, but we also have a driver component, sigh. I suppose what it's wanting is for me to add a scsi_driver type with remove methods ... which looks a bit silly since all of the SCSI drivers want different remove methods.
What's frustrating is that they are making everthing look like scsi now. IDE, USB, etc. And, they also brought back the /dev/sr0 for burners. That used to be an ide-scsi hack, which Linus didn't like. Then they fixed it so that it wasn't needed, and now they've changed it again to make it again look like scsi. I dunno. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thank you Larry: Yes, I recall The change to scsi everything came back in incrementally somewhere between 10.0 and 10.2 on openSuSe where we went from /dev/cdrecorder to /dev/sr0 for burners and /dev/hd(abcd) to /dev/sd(abcd) for PATA interfaces. Carlos, if this is the case, and the issue is known, would a bug report help in this case and help put the focus back on the problem or is this now part of the class of bugs that will just automatically be "closed" "INVALID"? Obviously if the warning is generated by base/driver.c:driver_register() due to the change back to using the scsi bus type for everything, then it needs to be fixed. Let me know if it is something that needs to be filed and I'm happy to do it but I don't want to waste time on another closed/invalid bug type. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
