I have never experienced this before since I rarely do anything with sound files and I rarely use konqueror as a file manager. Today I did both and I am so impressed.... This is with kde 2.2.1. I had a bunch of wav and mp3 files listed in the konqueror file browser, suddenly I started hearing a sound file being played. I moved my mouse cursor over the icon of another sound file and that one started playing. Apparently when the konqueror file browser is in either icon or multiColumn view it will 'preview' the files. I have to wonder what other goodies are hiding there which I am yet to discover. Avi -- Avi Schwartz avi@CFFtechnologies.com "I have to share the credit. Hey man, I just started using it as my sole web browser, since Netscape6.1 is such a trainwreck. Konqueror rules! Only thing is, it's not compatible with www.safeweb.com. I can raise it, but when I enter a site and Go, the popup window is never able to connect. (yes, JS global is checked and {openwindow} disable is unchecked) But since the switch, I'm actually able to get work done, rather than fighting Netscape. I put up with NS corrupting its own xml's, and freaky fonts, but when NS spontaneously erased all my bookmarks it was the last straw. For two weeks been very happy with Konqueror. Have not been able to get Evolution running, or I'd have dumped Messenger by now. I get the classic "Wrong permissions for /tmp/orbit-root", which Ximian describes as the "Big Red Check-engine Light", but none of their suggestions work. And in view of long-term stability problems with Gnome, today I switch to KMail and hope it works. Avi Schwartz wrote:

Ditto. Ever since moving to KDE 2.2.1, I've used Konqueror exclusively. I downloaded IBM's Java SDK to go with it (which for some reason only kicked in after I'd rebooted) and now I've got everything (I think). I can't see myself moving to another browser at any time in the forseable future. On Sunday 28 October 2001 6:27 pm, quantum@ultra2k.com wrote:

With Konq and Mozilla I get the message 'We're sorry, there has been an
error loading Elmo's World' after reaching 9 or 10 in the count, but the
Java console shows no errors. Both are using Blackdown Java 1.3 ant it
might be a problem with the JDK used. When I try the site with Netscape it
goes farther, I can see Elmo but then Netscape hangs (as it almost always
does when bringing up an applet).

This is not a problem with Konqueror. The problem is a bunch of lazy web
developers that don't care to develop and test their web pages for anything
but IE. If you really care about accessing the site, let them know that
they should fix their code.

Agreed. Our UI at work had issues with Mozilla 0.9.5 yet it worked with
Netscape 6.1 which is older code. I had a chat with the UI development
head and he checked it out. The code they wrote was seeing Mozilla (any
version) as Netscape 3.X .. so of course it didn't work. One change and
it was in business.
These issues are lack of testing because a lot of people just can't
believe that not everyone uses IE. Which is why I'm very much against
changing User Agent strings. I'm much more in favor of bitching at these
people publicly and privately until they realize the errors of their
ways. :)

Yes, I can load Safeweb, but try entering a URL in the whitewindow then Go. I get the new window, and it loads the Safeweb header, but nothing else. In Netscape when this happens, I hit reload and then it works, but it never works in Konq. True, I have the next older version... trying to wait for release of Suse7.3 . Suspicious that the K update on FTP is not 7.3 level. On Sunday 28 October 2001 14:51, you wrote:

Many thanks Avi & Ben. I'll upgrade. Have just converted to KMail, and it is a wonder compared with NS Messenger. Simpler, more powerful, full control of HTML for a change. Only thing is you can't insert images inline. Attachments only. I'm sure I could hand-code the HTML, but... I was thinking -- you can specify an external editor for KMail. What if I specify an HTML editor? Which one would be best? When I make the HTML, would an email Send draw the called images along with? Just curious. On Sunday 28 October 2001 15:04, you wrote:

I was thinking -- you can specify an external editor for KMail.
Settings > Configure Kmail > Composer > Editor Then check 'Use external editor' and name the editor you want to use: e.g. emacs %f
What if I specify an HTML editor?
Hmm. I tried quanta and I can certainly write e-mails in it and that goes back to Kmail. Didn't try using graphics or actually sending it and seeing the results.
Which one would be best?
Are you trying to start an argument <grin>. There is no way to answer this. You have to try several and make your own choice, or at least say what your used to and how you like to work.
When I make the HTML, would an email Send draw the called images along with? Just curious.
I haven't really checked it out but if you want in kmail to be able to send an HTML page with graphics embedded into it a la Netscape and Microsoft then I think you might have a tough job hand coding it. How would you right the link for the picture in the HTML? To find out more you should probably look at Netscape's sight for more information. Good luck. Jethro

Is it possible to set konq to show thumbnails of .wmf files when in icon mode? Also I seem to remember somebody saying recently that they got a preview of a wav file to play on mousover, how is this accomplished? Can the same be done w/ mp3's? lastly is there a way to preview truetype fonts (not yet installed), either in konq or with another prog? TIA dh
It was me that posted about the sound file preview. Yes, it does work with
mp3 files as well. Make sure that sound file preview is turned on:
Bring up a konq file browser, select 'View >> Preview' and make sure that
sound files are checked.
I don't know about .wmf files since I don't have any to test with.
As for previewing uninstalled ttf files, kfontinst can do it in a limited
fashion.
