[opensuse] Network Problem in 12.1
Hi, I was reinstalling 12.1 (KDE) on my desktop, but there was no Internet during the installation. I finished the installation and then when the net was back tried to connect. It refused. I tried both traditional method and Network manager but no success. The ethernet/wlan gets connected but when I ping any site it can't connect. Please help. From which medium were you installing 12.1 - from a CD or a DVD? If the CD then the installation must have internet access because it downloads files to do the installation and in your case the installation did not complete. You will need to start the installation from the beginning. If it is from the DVD then it is a different matter EXCEPT that towards the end of the installation the 'system' goes to check if the internet is available to be able to download the Release Notes (and something else, I cannot remember). If you did use the DVD then again I suggest that you start the installation from beginning and it should contrinue from where it left off. However, from what you have said above I think that you were installing from the CD - so restart the install. I installed it from CD, you are right. But I installed it from CD on my laptop as well (which was also not connected to the Internet). But, what I know openSUSE detects if that's laptop or desktop and chooses the network set-up accordingly. If it's laptop it chooses the Network Manager where you can configure the Internet from the tray, where as on Desktop it chooses the 'Traditiona method with ifup'. So, on laptop there was no issue I simple connected to the Internet via Network Manager but that was not the case on Desktop. I can re-install but I do want to know if there is a solution, as reinstalling is not very comfortable. Thanks for your suggestion :-) Swapnil

How do you know? What did you do to find out?
but when I ping any site it can't connect.
If network is up and an IP assigned, failure to ping is often a DNS problem. Did you try to ping any IP address instead of a name? Is /etc/resolv.conf empty or missing while booted? Did you try turning off software firewall? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. It shows in the system tray as connected.

What did that solve? Sounds like using a bulldozer to plant a rose bush. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I know Felix, but as I said that's my working machine and I had to file stories. It was single boot so I did not have the luxury to wait another day. :( Swapnil -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
