Hello SUSE users: I am trying out SUSE 10.1. It's release notes says: "If you do not register, the underlying system will continue to work. However, the registration service cannot provide the online update configuration unless registration is performed to pass mandatory information, including product, operating system type and version, and CPU type." Please confirm that without supplying the mandatory information I won't be able to use online update. Also please tell me how I can keep my 10.1 system up to date w/o registering. Thanks, IG _______________________________________________________________________________ Dedikált mesekönyvek Marék Veronikától http://www.bookline.hu/control/shlist?id=305&affiliate=fredmkkar2691 -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

All it will pass is the info you have stated, in this case it would be SUSE 10.1 and the type of cpu you have, nothing more. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

It also asks for hostname, which I don't like. Hello, Does that mean that I won't be allowed to install on two different boxes: my desktop and my laptop since the hardware is different ? Hello,

10.1 you can install on as many machines as you like. But you will only get installation support for one of them. It is of interest though to see the hardware people use to install on, and as a statistic how many different machines are running it. But it's not mandatory in any way. As Marcus said, if you like you can just add the installation source for the updates manually, without sending anything to the suse server -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

the system is mainly done to give you a srver lear of your place, nothing more. so you even can add yourself the update directory in the change source menu without any registering jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Just add an Update Source using the "Change Installation Source" dialog. ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/suse/update/10.1/ would be german URL, or use a mirror near you. This is totally anonymous ;) Ciao, Marcus -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Here's the list: http://en.opensuse.org/Mirrors_Released_Version And here's a example of an update url from that list: ftp://suse.mirrors.tds.net/pub/suse/update/10.1 (USA) -- Jim Barnes -- Certainly the game is rigged.
