Even when I run firefox (1.5) as root in 10.1 the option to have firefox automatically check for updates is unavailable. (Preferences -> Advanced -> Update). How does one obtain updates from mozilla? That service is for Mozilla.org builds. When you choose to use any Linux distro's RPM, you choose to get updates from your distro repository in the usual update manner. -- "All have sinned & fall short of the glory of God." Perhaps, but I installed Firefox 1.5 on top of a pre-existing 1.0 version on a Mandriva box and it allows me to update 1.5 if I run the bin as root. On an rpm based distro, you should always use an rpm to update not only the package itself but also the rpm database. Otherwise, you will end up with a mess after a while. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

As far as I know, the updates are only available when a new "version" is released and the app. will tell you that there is a new version. However, if you want to keep up-to-date and not be afraid of straying from official stable releases then you can download the nightly builds using this URL http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla1.8.0/ but bear in mind that this is work-in-progress and the nightly may have a bug. BUT I have been using the nightly builds for some 3 years now and have only come across a handful which were duds (pays, therefore, to keep a copy of the previous night's nightly to re-install if the new one does have a bug). Initially download the file firefox-1.5.0.4.en-US.linux-i686.installer.tar.gz untar, run the INSTALL and install firefox in your HOME/<YOURNAME> directory and not the default directory - this will allow you to keep full control over it. Then, on a daily basis, download firefox-1.5.0.4.en-US.linux-i686.tar.gz un-tar and simply replace '/firefox' in your /home/<yourname> directory. The profile for Firefox is in ./mozilla in your /home/<yourname> and this remains static so there is nothing to replace here. The ONLY THING you will need to do when you first install Firefox in your /home/<yourname> directory is to copy across the plugins from the current /usr/lib/browser-plugins (all of them) to /home/<yourname>/.mozilla/plugins; you will need to amend the symlink for nppdf.so. Because Firefox is automatically installed when SuSE is installed you will need to alter the Properties for FF (right-click on desktop icon) to point to the new location of the FF executable (/home/<yourname>/firefox/firefox) otherwise you will end up still opening the "old" version of FF which comes with SuSE. If you need more info just call out. (You can work backwards from the URL above and get to the nightly for Thunderbird if you want to. Do same as for FF [except that there is no installer file for TB] but because TB is not installed by SuSE you will need to Create a New Link to an Application on the Desktop for it.) I usually get my new Firefox from SUSE: http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/projects/mozilla/firefox/1.5....
