Thank you, Knurpht! I'll have to set up a couple of contacts with some of my family members. I'm sure my daughter is set up for video. When you mentioned "Microsoft credentials," are you referring to my M/S password, or something else? (Yes, the machine came with Windows 10 and I have my name and a M/S password, altho I'm not sure that they use the p/w any more--lately they seem to want a PIN, which I gave them. ) Maybe my daughter is already using Skype and she knows, but if not, you seem to. (She's probably using zoom, for business.) --doug

Skype belongs to microsoft, and you need a login to Skype, which can be a microsoft account, I guess. I don't know, my login is older than the purchase. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.1 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Answering myself: When I started up the app, I was presented with information from Microsoft that allows me to get the app going. It's quite clear. Altho I disagree with the constant imposition of passwords on everything one wishes to do on the computer, this is just another round of the same damn thing. And I really can't blame M/S for it-- it's endemic. --doug

In this case though, it's about controlling access to your Skype account. Do you really want anyone to be able to access it, without a password?

This is not something you 'do on the computer', you are doing things on MSs computers that allows communication from your computer ( you call some one ) through MSs Skype servers ( that know how to reach your contacts and search others ) to others' computers ( they answer your call ). Without proper authentication ( credentials, verification emails etc ), how could this ever be safe? -- Gertjan Lettink a.k.a. Knurpht openSUSE Forums Team

That's a general thing. You have the same on Google Meet. On the other hand, Jitsi, doesn't require an account, but there's nothing tying it to anyone. Skype can also be used for phone calls, including paid for long distance.

Just as you posted this my wife reconnected to someone via skype so I thought I'll have a look, so I followed these instructions. Installation worked, and installed only one package and no "weird" dependencies to god knows what. Skype started, I could even log in. But: skype didn't detect any video or audio devices at all. Video would be correct since my desktop doesn't have a camera, but no audio? And the webpage at microsoft that you get taken to doesn't mention linux with one word... So ... there's actually no one on skype that I can't talk to with something else. zypper rm -u skypeforlinux. Maybe not the page you got but there's plenty of pages that mention linux at skype.com. for instance: https://www.skype.com/en/get-skype/ https://support.skype.com/en/faq/fa10328/what-are-the-system-requirements-fo... https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA12041/what-is-the-latest-version-of-skype... Anyway. skypeforlinux is essential a specialized browser (node.js and electron), just as Signal, Slack etc. and a lot of other apps [1]. Skype has a browser version that is more or less the same as the electron/node.js version that you can visit. You can run it in your chromium based browser on this link [2]. I use Brave as my goto browser and it works fine here. I do have skypeforlinux and it also works fine on my opensuse TW. ref. [1] https://www.electronjs.org/apps [2] https://web.skype.com/ -- /bengan

Are you aware you only need a browser, with Skype for Web? No need to install anything. https://www.skype.com/en/blogs/2019-03-skype-online/

ISTR running into the very same when I played with Skype a few months back - AFAIR, it was to do with my stero microphone. With pavucontrol it was easily solved. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (10.4°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - virtual servers, made in Switzerland.

I think it's probably because MS Teams shares parts of the same backend as Skype. Well... Zoom and Yakyak (Hangouts client) are also using the same devices, but they can easily coexist. Of course I don't call on all of them in the same time, but the others correctly detect available devices and when I need them, I can readily use them, just if I start Teams earlier than Skype, Skype doesn't detect any audio/video device despite it's present and correctly recognized by the others. FWIW, I have a chat with some friends every week, using Jitsi. One friend frequently had problems with no video. It turns out, the problem only happened, if he used facial recognition in Windows 10 to log in to his computer. So this sort of problem isn't unique to Skype & Teams.

I know this is a slightly different answer, but you can also install Teams: https://packages.microsoft.com/yumrepos/ms-teams/ MS are phasing out Skype. It is being replaced by Teams. Or at least Skype for Business is going away. I can say that Teams on openSUSE has worked very well. Meetings with people in Sweden, Norway and India have worked without a hitch. Sharing desktops as well. I see no functional difference between Teams on Linux and on Windows. YMMV. But it has been working great for me. And, it installs via a proper repository that you can set up in openSUSE. I work in a Windows-centric organization. So I am forced to know these things. Don't blame me! I do everything I can to remain using my Tumbleweed desktop at work. With the exception of our company's brain-dead accounting system, I have been able to do so. -- Roger Oberholtzer
