What is the general consensus regarding the overall speed of 9.0 vs. 8.2? I have read that there may be a speed hit in upgrading to 9.0? I have 8.2 running at a level I'm comfortable with on a P-III 1000 Mhz but only after upgrading to 512 Mb of RAM. What are the implications of moving to 9 if any? Cheers! K. I am running same processor and ram. Some things about 9 are nice to have but I slightly regret upgrading from 8.2. There really isn't that much new about it apart from further (and very welcome) refinements to Yast. The big new ones are KDE 3.2, Gnome 4 and kernel 2.6 stable and I guess we'll have to wait for 9.x for those. There is definitely a speed hit here, though it's not that big, and memory seems to get used up a lot quicker (before disk swap kicks in). Maybe it's this new tool called SuSEplugger which top claims is eating 16 megs. Admittedly I am running a fully loaded setup. Even so, I have found myself wondering about a faster processor or thinning out the eyecandy. I do feel that running fully loaded on a P-III 1gig is now getting borderline. Just my 2 cents. :) Fish

Well I'm new to Suse, and I've really noticed the speed difference between Suse 9.0, and other distros including Mandrake 9.2, and Fedora 1. I can't even play a dvd with MPlayer anymore with out it skipping all the time..... Mof.

That has nothing to do with the speed of SuSE. It is because you have not enabled dma on that device. Yast / Hardware / IDE DMA Mode and set the dvd to use dma. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Most other distros enable DMA on cdrom/dvd drives out of the box. SuSE takes a more reserved approach. Can't say that I have noticed a speed reduction in the overall 9.0 setup. System loads as fast or faster than before, programs load quicker, smoother. Compiling goes incredibly well and much faster or has been my experience thus far! Now you might be taking a hit with KDE or Gnome, both of which have changed quite a bit, but those seem much faster as well to me. Also, just got XFce4 installed and that is very much a quick GUI. XFce comes with SuSE, but is an older version, yet still worthy of your attention if looking for a faster interface. For me, XFce4 would be my second gui choice, even over Gnome. Overall, I consider 9.0 a worthy update and if optimized correctly, will provide you a slick setup! Not trying to say you didn't optimize your setup guys, just not seeing the speed reduction you seem to be experiencing. I have to second that. I have not seen any speed reduction when comparing 9.0 to 8.1. In fact in certain respects, 9.0 feels faster. It certainly boots faster. Victor

Well 9.0 feels faster at my end, not slower, on 2 different machines - haven't done anything scientific to establish the truth of this, mind you. But several weeks after performing the installations, I'd still say that's the way it feels. Best Fergus
