Speed of 9.0 vs. 8.2

What is the general consensus regarding the overall speed of 9.0 vs. 8.2? I have read that there may be a speed hit in upgrading to 9.0? I have 8.2 running at a level I'm comfortable with on a P-III 1000 Mhz but only after upgrading to 512 Mb of RAM. What are the implications of moving to 9 if any? Cheers! K.
