I am not going to complain anymore. Anyone who sends an email with an attachment will be forever after sent to /dev/nul on this email system. Even on W98 I have effective filters. --doug

Doug, I don't know what you are complaining about. As I've said, all attachments except plain text and pgp stuff get stripped. -- -ckm
Some plain text attachments are megabytes worth. That's why they are sent as attachments. They obviously should only be sent selectively to those who might actually be able to act on them. And all attachments are automatically copied to the HD, so I don't lose them, and can use them later. This has to do with my volunteer job as Editor of the Pedal Steel Guitar Newsletter, a journal presently in its 28th year. And I disagree, to some degree: the MS VSA (or whatever they are) files may be plain text, but over the course of years, even 1K files add up. And who needs them? --doug At 12:58 11/28/2001 -0800, Christopher Mahmood wrote:

Not here...mail larger than 30K bounces.

fine, configure you MTA to refuse mail larger than what you consider to be reasonable if 30K is too large for you.

It would be completely unjustifiable to strip crypto stuff...the poor guy who inadvertantly started this thread by signing his mail has every right to that. Let me sumarize the few policies just for those who, for whatever reason, refuse to read either the FAQ or the numerous postings I've made about this: 1) Replies go to the sender and not to list. There are two exceptions to this, suse-blinux and suse-blinux-d, b/c of a peculiarity with the braille tablets that most of the subscribers use. 2) All attachments are stripped except for plain text and pgp/crypto stuff. The only exception is one particular list that needs them (m17n). Message size is limited to 30K 3) We don't do digests. The reasons for the above can all be found in the found in the faq and discussion of them on the list is considered off-topic. Please, lets end this now. -- -ckm
Doug: It sounds to me as if you are allowing your personal administrative policy to dictate to the list members how we should post to the list. I may be wrong, but that's my $.02 worth. Glenn Williams - n0hn@abq-nm.com Registered Linux user # 135678 since 1994

There is another message I sent tonite that explains my problem. I don't need humongous plain text messages--usually some kind of impenetrable C code--loading up my hard drive. Because I automatically archive attachments, for a good reason, I detest those that are completely unnecessary and should be included as part of the message. If they were, then those who are not interested, or cannot contribute, can simply pass on to the next message. My use of Windows for email is explained also, if it's of any interest to anyone. I AM trying to use Linux, off and on, but when I am trying to get things done, I'm afraid it will be Windows until XP takes hold (is that its name?) and at that point I will have to leave. Win 98SE would seem like my last MS OS. --doug At 10:26 11/29/2001 -0700, Glenn Williams wrote:

Can everyone please take this off-list. If Doug wants to delete every message with an attachment, then he is free to do so. In fact, he will probably delete this one. It doesn't affect anyone else if he wants to miss out on most of the content on this list (a lot of regulars have signatures). Thats my $0.02 anyway. -v -- Victor R.
