Problems installing Suse 10. "No hard disk found"
Hi, I have got a brand new HP nx9420 laptop, and I am trying to install Suse 10.0 on this PC. I have used the instlux program, which I installed in XP to create a Grub boot. When I boot into the Suse installation menu, and chooses the FTP server, Yast is loaded. But after the accept license screen there is an error message: "No hard disk found", and I can't proceed with the installation. I have added acpi=off to the grub menu.lst, and selected the ide=generic module in the installation menu, but same messages. What can I do to get this working? Thanks. - Jostein -- Jostein Berntsen <jbernts@broadpark.no>

Here's an idea: If you boot the ncurses (text-based) installer, you have the ability to manually load kernel modules (drivers) for your network card/chip and various filesystems. Make sure you've got support for all the common filesystems loaded (VFAT, NTFS (r/o), EXT3 and ReiserFS) before starting the installation. Another cause for the problem might be that your intervention with 'instlux' is 'confusing' the installer by presenting it with an unanticipated environment. As far as I know, you should have been able to perform the installation on the 'native' ... i.e. unmodified ... system. hth & regards, Carl

hth & regards,
Thanks for this input. I have tried to load different file systems and IDE/SATA drivers, but have not been able to make it work yet. Not to much help by googling either. It seems that Suse will work on the HP nx9420 laptop, by the information on this site: http://www.novell.com/partnerguide/product/203381.html I will look into the possible instlux issue you mention, and see what I can find there. - Jostein -- Jostein Berntsen <jbernts@broadpark.no>

I finally solved this. I had to disable SATA in the BIOS. Then the installation proceeded as expected, and the hard disk was recognized.. - Jostein -- Jostein Berntsen <jbernts@broadpark.no>
