Hi everyone, Just installed MozillaFirebird and I quite like it - one problem though - the fonts are absolutely awful (jagged and unclear to read). Any suggestions or ideas why this is so? Does anyone else have this issue? cheers, james. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! DSL - Now only $29.95 per month! http://sbc.yahoo.com
Every time I install a new mozilla or firebird I remove the fonts directory from ~/.mozilla else I don't get anti-aliased fonts. When mozilla or firebird starts it recreates this directory. If you installed from Mr. Ogley's rpm then you should not need to do the following, but if you got firebird from the mozilla website you need to make two changes in [MozillaFirebird directory]/defaults/pref/unix.js First this line which, if you got the program from the Mozilla website, will have the default value "false" at the end: pref("font.FreeType2.enable", true); Then you need to add a line like this to the same file: pref("font.directory.truetype.1", "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype"); where the directory is the location of your truetype fonts. You can have several such lines. HTH, Henry Harpending On Sun, Aug 03, 2003 at 04:43:33PM -0700, James Philp wrote:

thanks. we seem to have made some progress. they look
better but are still rather smudged. some of the fonts
look ok (like the one in the yahoo mail i'm writing in
now) but basically anything else looks pretty smudgy.
any other ideas?
thanks, james.

work ie can't type addresses in the bar, can't type

does anyone know of an rpm for suse that actually

I am certainly no expert, but my experience is that Ogley's rpms, from http://usr-local-bin.org, always work. There are many other updates to gnome packages there. Re font quality, if you are using either KDE or GNOME there is a font setting GUI where you can specify the kind of antialiasing that is done. I do not know myself what the options do, and I have not experimented with them, but you might try playing with that. Henry Harpending On Sun, Aug 03, 2003 at 06:20:58PM -0700, James Philp wrote:

måndagen den 4 augusti 2003 03.20 skrev James Philp: package from mozilla.org. I really loved Firebird before this happened but now I can't use it at all. What is of interest is that I installed the very same package on my laptop where it works without these problems. Both boxes have SuSE 8.2, the stationary system is fully upgradet with APT whereas my laptop is not. Can that have anything to do with this? Cheers, Helgi Örn

Symlink their two directories in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/msfonts/ and .../msfonts-style/.
I forgot to mention that I added them to /etc/X11/XF86Config so that they are available to X, also. Ed Harrison
James,
Try getting an RPM of Firebird with XFT support. You can get one built
for SuSE 8.2 at:
http://www.pryan.org/firebird/hendikins
