[opensuse] Libreoffice fonts after latest upgrade
Running 42.2 I did a zypper up yesterday which included a lot of changes to Libreoffice, which I accepted. The upshot here is that LO no longer uses Bitstream Charter, which is my font of choice for LO docs and spreadsheets. Is there a way I can fix this, still using the OS LO installation ? As normal, just create a new document that uses the fonts and margins, etc.. that you like and then save the choices as your Default Document Template.
From then on, you open LO, you get those fonts and settings. Just google LO set default font and you will find a howto.

OK, I opened LO writer to create a new document my problem immediately is that BS Charter is no longer in the drop down list of fonts. Doing the exact same thing on another 42.2 box which has not been upgraded BS Charter is still there. I can set default fonts but not if the one I want to set as default is not available. My suspicion is that the OS upgrade has broken something, at least it has for me, so can I roll that back ? It all looked innocent enough so I accepted what was offered, not being that much of an expert on that sort of thing. Is it just me or have others found the same thing I wonder ? My guess is that on one machine the bitstream-vera-fonts package is installed, and not on the other. To set a default font for writer, simply fire up writer, go to the Settings ( In dutch Extra - Options ) - Writer - default fonts. Set it there. Same can be done for the other LO apps. -- Gertjan Lettink, a.k.a. Bitstream Charter comes from package xorg-x11-fonts, which has not been updated since 42.2 release. Neither has package bitstream-vera-fonts been updated since 42.2 release. Bitstream Charter fonts are bitmap files, while Vera's are scalable (.ttf). # fc-match 'bitstream charter' c0648bt_.pfb: "Bitstream Charter" "Regular" Maybe the problem you see is connected to a Java update? FWIW, I believe I just replicated Michael's problem. There were a bunch of updates pending and I accepted them all except the LibreOffice one. I then checked I had Bitstream Charter in my font list and I did. I then accepted the LibreOffice update and now I no longer have Bitstream Charter in my font list. :( I have no idea why and have had no time to investigate, but the problem is real and does not affect just the OP. I do observe that the update is listed as a 'security' update but is in fact a major version update, which seems at best a misleading description. It also pulled in a bunch of extra packages for more functionality that I have no interest in. So I am one very disappointed punter at present. AFAICT, if Michael really cares about this font, one cure might be to go into YaST and downgrade to the previous version. I haven't tried that myself so I can't be sure it will solve his problem. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I can't check this at the moment as I'm using Linux Mint (dual boot) but I'm sure you are right. The whole point of this is that prior to the update LO "did" use Bitstream Charter and now it doesn't. I did have a quick look in Yast to try and revert to the previous version of LO but that didn't provide the previous version, next time I reboot into 42.2 I'll have another look at that. M Whether this should now be called "solved" I don't know, but what I did was delete LO 5.3.3.2 and install LO 5,2.5.1 via yast. I locked it too. So now LO works as I want. I'm not that attached to BS Charter as opposed to other fonts I just happen to like it as a default, like when I had to us MS Office for work the default was ariel, so I used that.
Others who have commented, for which thanks know more about all this than I do, particularly why the latest LO as provided by openSUSE has done what it did. M -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The 5.3 version's Harfbuzz font shaping engine dropped support for Type1 fonts, thus apparently 5.3 no longer supports fonts from the two xorg-x11-font* packages, unless it is switched to the "old" engine in TextLayoutEngine settings.

Bitstream is the name of the foundry, the place where the fonts are designed (and used to be made in hot metal days). The former is bitmaps, the second is scalable. It is possible that LO does not use by default bitmapped fonts. There may be a switch for it.
There is. My preferred font is Bookman Old Style and this appears and disappears when the switch , Non-proportional fonts only, is on or off.
But this does not show Bitstream Charter, only shows Bitstream Vera fonts.
It appears that I did not realize that "Bitstream" is the brand, and "Charter" is the model name. So the two above do not compare. Sort of. I recall in Grad school we used a Terak (UCSDp) that printed to an IBM typewriter that had a metal ball that contained the characters. One could select a fonts in the document. The ball had to be changed for the needed font. The installed ball was detected. You had to have the right one. Or you needed to remove that font from the document. Needless to say, few people messed around with fonts. Are you still having trouble with the Charter font? Patrick provided the answer and I supplemented his answer. What Patrick wrote is probably below in this thread to your current post. Long term you will need a better solution than locking down v5.2.x. 42.3, due for release next week, has only 5.3.x (and likely will goto 5.4.x or beyond during its lifetime). Support for 42.2 will end 6 months later. Surely as old as Charter is there must by now be an available metric equivalent to it in ttf and/or otf format. At smaller sizes, Thorndale AMT from the old SuSE agfa-fonts rpm looks very close to it to me. The solution to Michael's problem is quite simple. Even for <5.4 version of LO it is not a "temporary" fix or solution because all that is required to be done is to use the existing config option in LO and in less than 30 seconds Bitstream Charter becomes available to be selected :-) . However, I can see the problem caused when something which was automatically availalbe when LO was started suddenly is no longer there. Must be a very scary experience, I dare say. No, it's not just you. Looks like LO redid its font selection handling. My font list looks horrible. It shows all the foreign (to me) fonts with character examples to the right-side of the list. It is a cluster. I'm not surprised. It looks like they updated the listing to show the fonts in their rendered style and it looks horrible and probably takes an addition 10M of RAM - damn frustrating. The upshot here is that LO no longer uses Bitstream Charter, which is my font of choice for LO docs and spreadsheets.
Which other fonts have disappeared? Are most or all from xorg-x11-font*?
Is there a way I can fix this, still using the OS LO installation ?

Actually, in that article you link to, if you read the first comment and follow the instructions apparently from LO, you can switch the text layout engine in use and Bitstream Charter 'magically' comes back. Whether that will cause problems somewhere down the line, I don't know. It says: Böðvar Björgvinsson: "I contacted LO at their Facebook page and received a reply that you can indeed go to the old settings which support Type-1. This is the reply: "Hi, you can switch to the old engine in the menu: Tools > Options > Advanced. Then click Open Expert Configuration, search for TextLayoutEngine, and double-click the result – change it to "old", save and restart LibreOffice. That may help!" Thanks, Felix!

That's a bit disturbing that they dropped support for Type 1 unless you use the old engine. Reason being is that OpenType fonts have support for TrueType curves (Quadratic Bezier curves) and Type 2 curves (cubic Bezier curves), which is very similar to Type 1 curves. I wonder if they are no long using FreeType, which I know has support for all three curves. Then again, I don't think there is a JNI binding for FreeType, so using that font rendering engine with LibraOffice might not be feasible. I'd have to check in on it.

Indeed, as documented in the release notes: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/5.4#Removed_configuration_o... I suggest writing to LO and ask the same question as Böðvar Björgvinsson
it does have Text, Layout and Engine, but nothing that I see providing a path to "old".

Forgot to mention that if one is using Breeze Dark in System Settings/Work Space Theme/Look and Feel you won't see TextLayoutEngine when looking for it in in LO -- the cell containing the wording is white (on white). Change form Breeze Dark to, say, Opensuse and the cell in LO magically appears :-) One more thing: use the switch in LO for non-proportional fonts (in Fonts option) as this affects whether or not you see Bitstream Charter.
