[SLE] Technical vs NonTechnical
On another thread, it was opined that Novell and those that follow Novell with respect to Linux will limit use of Linux to people with technical knowledge of computers (and programming) and industrial/commercial sites where there is a substantial IT help presence. The reference is to the increased necessity on the part of the Linux user to download and apply non-GPL drivers to the Linux installation. This takes not only technical knowledge but time, as well -- even on the part of those who have the knowledge and skill to apply those drivers and make such adjustments as are necessary to make the interface between the drivers and the kernel efficient. I think that is right, and that may be too bad for the spread of Linux, all in the name of GPL purity. There are palliatives one can offer the relative tyro, and I hope that Novell and others following Novell's lead will make the installation of these drivers painless with plain, tyro-oriented language in accompanying instructions. Indeed, I think that the acquisition and installation of these drivers should be included in installation assistance offered those who buy the boxed set. dj tuchler -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com
