Yes, mere mortals can use it! It is suitable for most packages, I don't know specifically for BOINC.
and,
can i get a user-account to log-on to openSUSE OBS ?
If you can file a bugzilla, you can log into OBS http://build.opensuse.org Use your normal opensuse bugzilla login and password.
or,
is OBS something that must be run from a bootable DVD or USB Stick
That is for advance users only. The reference instance (build.opensuse.org) in the cloud should be what you use unless you have a specific reason to run your own private instance.
..............
any help to de-mystify if i may be helped by OBS to build an up-to-date BOINC will be appreciated.
See http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Build_Service_Tutorial There are other tutorials out there. I assume this is too old? https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?project=network&package=boinc-client If so, I would still branch that as a starting point. After you log into OBS, there are a couple ways to branch an existing package, or you can use osc to do it from the command line of your pc. Feel free to ask easy questions here. If you get to where the questions are hard, ask them on opensuse-packaging@opensuse.org. That's where the experts hang out.
thanks ellan
