[opensuse] Not able to find any OpenOffice package for the SUSE 13.1
Hi, I'm using openSUSE 13.1, on my 32 bit machine. I need to work with OpenOffice document. But I'm not getting any software for my version of SUSE. I checked here - https://en.opensuse.org/OpenOffice.org. Nothing I found for 13.1. I got one link - http://www.itzgeek.com/how-tos/linux/opensuse/how-to-install-openoffice-org-... , but it is for 12.1. Is there any repository through which I can get it in 13.1 ? I tried to search through zypper also, but didn't get it as I don't have the repo added for the OpenOffice software. -- ================ Regards, Arup Rakshit ================ Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. The project had some trouble (due Sun being brought by Oracle) and did a fork. This fork is called "LibreOffice". Now a days OpenOffice is in the hands of the Apache foundation, but most Linux-Distros have held fast on LibreOffice. For most users, the differences may be in the handling / surface, but not where it matters most: the file handling. LibreOffice is in the standard repo / install media for openSUSE 13.1. Hope this helps. - Yamaban. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I don't know if openSUSE has packages for the apache openoffice, but libreoffice packages are in the standard repos . Actually I need the openoffice only due to my some programming need. It seems now I'm in trouble. I don't have enough RAM so that I can install Windows and VM to work from SUSE. :(

I haven't looked lately but there are probably java packages that you can dl from apache/openoffice and install by hand. Thanks for the reply. I'll give it (https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ/Installation/How_do_I_ins...) a try. -- ================ Regards, Arup Rakshit ================ Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. http://www.openoffice.org/download/ Just go there and look for the 32bit RPM version. It works -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I download the RPM package from http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html. However, this requires manually installing all the individual RPMs, but it does work. On the other hand, openSUSE includes LibreOffice, which generally does what OpenOffice does. You may want to consider it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Could you confirm the the steps mentioned in the link, I have given are what you did in your case. I'm actually always used _zypper_ and YAST all the time. So getting panicked to do it manually. :)

I have it already. But I found some docs are being rendered in OpenOffice format perfectly but not in the case of LibreOffice. -- ================ Regards, Arup Rakshit ================ Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. It's been a while since I did it by hand, but IIRC, I just opened the zipped file in Konqueror and installed all the RPMs, including the desktop integration for openSUSE. What I do these days is create a repository in Yast by copying the contents of "en_US" to a directory and pointing the repository config to it. This way it's easy to upgrade versions and the repository can also be used by other computers on my network. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

to install anything from rpm, simply type "zypper in *.rpm" as root, but I didn't found a way to install it together with libreoffice (the files are the same) jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I have both installed on a couple of computers. No problem I can see. no :-( oh.. ok, my fault
I use dolphin and a root xterm in dolphin but didn't notice that xterm do not follow the gui when su'ed, so the integration was not good that said, the link is the same as libreoffice ("soffice" :-)), so I will have to make some fix (easy) in fact this step is not even necessary, I'ts enougth to think that to start openoffice one have to type soffice (not that obvious, despite the fact I was a registered staroffice user :-) thanks jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Perhaps you should try reinstalling. The repository method I mentioned works well. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

all is clean, now. untar the openoffice (apache) tarball, make zypper in *.rpm, go to /opt/openoffice4 and make clic on "staroffice" (or make any link to it that is jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The rpm command have a "--prefix" option. Never tried it myself, but it should help. Charles -- "All language designers are arrogant. Goes with the territory..." (By Larry Wall)

LibreOffice will work with OpenOffice files, and it's already on your system. If you must have OpenOffice, just go to http://www.openoffice.org/download/ and download the rpm file, and install it. -- Bob Smits <bob@rsmits.ca> "Microsoft is not the answer.
