It's bad to run fsck on mounted drives. Unmount /dev/hdb1 or if that's your root, boot from a floppy, then run e2fsck -p /dev/hdb1 -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
Dear Zentara, Thanks for your reply. i tried running :- fsck /dev/hdb1 -a -s -t ext2 but got the following reply Device not configured while trying to open /dev/hdb1. Possable non-exisitant or swap device. fsck.ext2 /dev/hdb1 failed (status 8) Run it Manually. then i tried e2fsck -p dev/hdb1 and got e2fsck: Bad majic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/hdb (null):it then sufggests that i try e2fsck -b 8913 <device> which dowsnt work. <sob> any idea what is going wrong ? The hdb1 was unmounted at the time i was doing all this and the line in the /etc/fstab for mounting it goes as follows: /dev/hdb1 /hdb ext2 defaults 0 1 Many thanks, Richard McElligott -----Original Message----- From: zentara [mailto:zentara@zentara.net] Sent: 24 August 2002 13:05 To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] FSCK Error /dev/hdb1 On Sat, 24 Aug 2002 05:07:09 +0100 "Richard McElligott" <128bit@128bit.fsnet.co.uk> wrote:

Well are you sure /dev/hdb1 is a swap device? What does fdisk -l /dev/hdb say? Do you have windows on this machine? I've seen windows do this to drives after running defrag. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
