Dear All and Joe, I suppose the only way to have the thing in the shops the exact same day as it appears in shops near SuSE HQ would be to make everyone in Europe wait until the distribution was fully in place across the whole of the continental US - maybe a bit hard to do. Then I guess Brazilian and New Zealand users could demand the same thing. I'm not trying to be annoying here - what I'm really getting at is to remind all friends in the States to keep badgering their government to be a bit less xenophobic when it comes to imports and exports, whether human or on CD. The reason I say this is that everyone outside the US is usually on this end of the stick, i.e. having to wait ages for things US users / readers / filmgoers / listeners have had for months or even years. The whole crypto mess is a good example. So c'mon guys, you're in one of the world's biggest democracies, pester those congressmen into taking a wider and more open view. Unfortunately, it does NOT work that way. Democracy is a delusion in the mind of man. If it worked, we wouldn't have things like the DMCA, or crypto export laws. If people actually used their heads (which is a basic premise of democracy - it assumes people can think), we wouldn't even have a patent office.

Thats a bit fatalistic :-). I'd say Democracy requires the following: Well educated populace (guess the West is now failing at least on that) Majority participation of the populace at all time, not just around election time (guess that one is messed up too). Well, it may sound that way because this is a general SuSE Linux mailing list. There is no charter stating what can and cannot be discussed on the list. Personally, I prefer it that way. It maintains a sense of community. Victor Cardona

I know this is way OT, but has anyone noticed there is a small, but a growing number of people on this list who attack democracy, or hint that socialism is better? It seems that it is a disturbing trend - if those who already think that the oss movement is socialist, see such posts, it could certainly hurt Open Source. -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Please note that not everyone who's not amused by democracy advocates socialism. For that matter, even if there, don't forget that not everyone on the list is from the US and Western Countries. Even if they are, they may not share you views. And for the record, I was not "attacking" democracy in any sense that would infer I'd like to do away with it.

Jonathan, I wasn't necessarily saying you were advocating socialism - others have, however. I do wonder about even discontent with democracy. It's certainly the best of the governmental systems out (IMO), save theocracy which is something that hasn't happened _yet_. Now, I'm going to go over to the corner and be quite, before I get in trouble for being OT again. <g> -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Tim, Socialism is not better than democracy any more than an apple is better than an orange. Democracy is a terrible political system. Its only selling point is that its better than all the others. Socialism is an economic system that tries to balance self interest with the interest of the community. One might compare socialism with communism which places an inordinate emphasis on the community or capitalism which exalts the individual. Try comparing democracy to autocracy or anarchy. You might find that more helpful. If this sounds like a flame I'm sorry. I'm new to this e-mail stuff. thank you, Peter "Timothy R. Butler" wrote:

I have a friend, an assistant carpenter, who lives in Poland. What is the most reliable (and economical) way to send him a copy of SuSE 7.1? I was thinking perhaps of purchasing it via CC in Europe and mailing or FedXing it to his house. Any feel for what it would cost? BTW, Democracy may be dilusional, but its the best going form of political delusion I've seen, heard, read about or lived. It beats the dilusions the Chinese live under, or the Cuban version, or the old "workers utopia" in the USSR. Now those were REAL dilusions. I would like to point out that I do not know of a better way to run a government, and I'm not suggesting the use of a differ ant method. It's just that some people think it works better then it really does. I must say that Kingship has worked really well a few times, when there's someone who knows what their doing in charge...sadly, a king that knows something is even less common then a populace that knows something ;-)
