[opensuse] Radeon X1650 blank screen
I've spent way too much time trying to get this to work, but in the process I've gathered plenty of information, so hopefully someone out there can give me some pointers ;) My computer: CPU: Athlon XP 64 3600 RAM: 1GB Graphics card: ATI Radeon X1650 Pro After following all the instructions at http://en.opensuse.org/ATI_Driver_HOWTO I find myself with the terrible blank screen problem, which resolves itself when I restore /etc/X11/xorg.conf Here is a link to the output I get when I run X from a remote ssh session, logged as root: http://pastebin.ca/974988 Here is a link to xorg.conf generated by running sudo aticonfig --initial: http://pastebin.ca/974999 Finally, here is my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file content: http://pastebin.ca/975010 Also, a few lines from running lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV535 [Radeon X1650 Series] (rev 9e) 01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV535 [Radeon X1650 Series] (rev 9e) 01:00.1 Class 0380: 1002:71e7 (rev 9e) Cheers! -- Nicolas Connault, Web developer ------------------------------- ICQ: 826611 www.simplifytheweb.com Email: nicolasconnault@gmail.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

under the section 'Modules' add load "dri" Also, did you run the ati-config program? It's been a while since I've had to do it, but if you run it with --help, it will give you the parameters. If it doesn't, Make sure the kernel module is loaded: 17:14 Rankin-P35a~> lsmod | grep fglrx fglrx 1553100 20 agpgart 35764 2 fglrx,ati_agp If not, that is your first step. If you do not have the kernel-source installed, install it with yast or zypper. Also install kernel-syms. Currently the developers have not built the ATI 8.47 driver rpms for opensuse. The latest driver in the rpm repository is 8.45. The 8.45 driver is OK, but he 8.47 driver is cleaner. When you install the ATI driver, the post-install will attempt to build the fglrx.ko kernel module against the kernel source. If it isn't installed, you won't get the module built. The short version: (1) Grab the xorg.conf for 10.3 i386 or x86_64 from: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/hardware/computers/nirvana/xorg.conf.ati... (don't forget to change the monitor information) (2) Grab the prebuilt ATI 8.47 driver for 10.3 x86_64 from: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/hardware/computers/nirvana/fglrx64_7_1_0... (3) as root, Go to runlevel 3 and remove your existing driver (as root) # init 3 # rpm -e $(rpm -qa | grep fglrx) (4) Install the new fglrx driver (also as root from runlevel 3) # rpm -Uvh fglrx64_7_1_0_SUSE103-8.471-1.x86_64.rpm (5) modify and install the xorg.conf from step (1) above or start fresh with: # sax2 -m 0=fglrx (6) reboot (I know you can manually unload the modules and reload the new module without rebooting, but there is a conflict between part of the radeon driver that isn't unloaded from memory and the new fglrx module, so it is easier to simply reboot) For the long version and for building the driver yourself, see: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/linux/howto/ati_quick-reference To make compiz work with your new fglrx driver, see: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/linux/compiz/Compiz-Howto_ATI-Mobility-R... modify as required for your card (should work without any problems) If you still have problems, post your: /etc/X11/xorg.conf /var/log/Xorg.0.log the output of lsmod | grep fglrx -- David C.
