It probably is, but as I pointed out in the original post, the call to cron.daily is commented out in /sbin/init.d/boot. WHY?? OK, now for us dummies, if it (cron.daily) is NOT called by /sbin/init.d/boot WHAT DOES call it? Yes I see that cron.daily is in the /etc/crontab script but how does that run. Who/What calls /etc/crontab. It isn't clear, to me, and no one has come forward to explain it. I have asked the same question more than once. It is not in the book! The man page included in SuSE 5.1 covers the crontab -e method only. Why has SuSe changed methods and not included the relavent man pages?
sorry for the confusion... You may find the systemwide crontab under /etc/crontab. This mainly is created to be a) SystemV compatible and b) for making it easier for the SysAdmin to create entries for e.g. new or uucp. There still exists your personal "root" crontab. You may choose either of them. Anyway..if the commands are listed in /etc/crontab and in root's crontab they will be executed twice. You may uncomment the line in /sbin/init.d/boot if you like (need it). Well..the page you were referring to was correct. The sentence might be misleading as I don't understand it either..;) So, here is a sample entry for /etc/crontab with explanation: 53 6 * * * root $HOME/bin/cron.daily Mins Hours * * * User Command We thought this to be selfexplanatory..The command is run as the user given. This make it easy to perform systemwide tasks and to keep them together instead of having to edit the crontag for uucp and news... That's it..;^) -micha- --- Michael Burghart, S.u.S.E.
