Hi, I'm trying to compile a custom boot-cd to make the 9.0 installation work with my i875P chipset and ICH5 S-ATA controller. Since this hardware setup requieres an -ac patches kernel with S-ATA support I need to find a way to patch the original 9.0 install-cd to use my custom kernel to boot. Does anyone know how to build such a custom boot-cd so that the installation can be started from there? I already made a boot-cd which boots my kernel, but I couldn't figure out what I need to make the installation start with yast, as it's done with Suse 9.0. Does anyone know what it takes to build such a cd? Also, since S-ATA with ICH5 controllers are still not support in any major distro I thought about sharing this boot-cd, should anyone want it. Also, some support guy at suse told me there would be a bootable 2.6 Kernel for installation purposes on the original cds or dvds. I couldn't find this kernel! Is this just a rumor or did some really find this kernel? I know you can post-install the 2.6 kernel, but that won't help me solving my S-ATA issues since I need to boot already at installation with it... Does anyone know the full boot-options of these boot-cds? Greetings, Andres

Hmmm. Haven't got my 9.0 yet but will soon. I managed to get 8.2 to boot on this chipset & disk using a 2.4.21 Mantel kernel, so I'm surprised that the 2.4.21 on 9.0 doesn't support it. What symptoms are you seeing?

Another alternative is to put the BIOS in [SATA] Legacy mode to install, then swap kernels and set the BIOS to Enhanced (check the archive for some more detail). Cheers, Dave

The kernel keeps on freezing on "hde: attached ide-disk." What is this Mantel kernel you are suggesting?

Did that too, but couldn't install anyway. Still getting this "hde: attached ide-disk." freeze. My hardware consists of a MSI 875P Neo-FIS2R board with an ATI 9500 pro gpu and a Seagate ST3120026AS S-ATA disk. Greetings, Andres

They're the SuSE development kernels. Look at: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/ But I hope that the sequence of development kernels I was referring to have now become the 9.0 production kernel.

Sorry, haven't seen that message. Perhaps somebody else knows what it means. I'm using an Intel D875PBZ. Search the archive for messages from me to find various threads about configuring the kernel (I'm a newcomer to the black art). Does the hardware boot successfully using some other OS? (windoze or Knoppix or something) Cheers, Dave

Well, S-ATA specific patches for ICH5 haven't made it, obviously.

I know I need to build a specific kernel with some Alan Cox patches. That's is working with Gentoo, i.e. But what I'm trying now is to make a patched installation boot-cd to use to install suse 9.0.

Yepp, it does. No hardware issues here.
