Someone on this list suggested to another user that he delete the drift file for ntp, which got me curious about the status of my file. Well, there is no drift file. It has never been deleted which means it was never there. ...And there are problems, seemingly: 2 Aug 17:51:30 ntpd[31750]: can't open /var/lib/ntp/drift/ntp.drift.TEMP: No such file or directory ...and that is all I ever get though the clock seems to be correct --probably that way from the initial xntpd startup, I would imagine, since that log states the clock was set. Many thanks for the files' links. I decided to go w/Leen's file since it was a little newer ...and I am not certain if it is working correctly. I managed to get a synch, but am still getting the same file error.
Did you do a 'rcxntpd restart'? Cheers, Leen

Cheers,
Leen I did not. I looked in the log & it indicated that it had been shut down restarted --probably so the newer version was active rather than the deleted version. However, I just now *did* execute that cmd ...just in case. Thanks for the reminder. :-) -- ...CH "The more they over-think the plumbing,

I remember that from my SuSE-9.0 time. That was a bug that was fixed in the following package: http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/people/pth/xntp/9.0/i386/xntp... If you use apt, add suse-people as a source in /etc/apt/sources.list, do 'apt update' followed by 'apt --no-checksig install xntp'. Cheers, Leen
Post-update, Leen's reminder to restart xntpd seems to have done the trick. Now, the log looks like this: 3 Aug 20:48:29 ntpd[29781]: synchronized to 140.142.16.34, stratum 1 3 Aug 21:54:49 ntpd[29781]: synchronized to 216.200.93.8, stratum 1 ...which, it seems to me, is a damned site better. Many thanks to all who participated in helping me find the solution! You certainly are a good bunch of K:-) (propeller-heads)! <G> -- ...CH "The more they over-think the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain." Scotty
For information on the drift file, go there:
http://nf.apac.edu.au/facilities/sc/compaq_mirror/HTML/MAN/MAN4/0189____.HTM
and also www.ntp.org
All my linux servers point to an internal time server, it works but I have
no drift file, my /var/lib/npt does not contain it, and I have no error,
even if I've xntp-4.1.1-286 which seems to have that bug?

This depends on what components you have in your sources.list file. It is in 'suser-gbv' component from 'ftp.gwdg.de' repository. Cheers!
