Does anyone know the URL where I can place an advance order for SuSE Linux V10 Upgrade? I'd appreciate any pointers. -- Donald D. Henson, Managing Director West El Paso Information Network The "Non-Initiation of Force Principle" Rules

I've always waited for the version 'major.release2' if it is released (that would be 10.2) Depends whether Novell will bother since 'Opensuse' is on the case. Somebody knows, So It might mean downloading large dvd iso's and trying to find an 8.5 gb +r/-r blank dvd supplier that should be fun getting as 4.7 gb disks is easy but 8.5 gb disks are pricey and hard to source. I'd rather have dvd media just in case the net connection goes up the spout along with everything else, and patch from that point to an online source. Depends - my feelings are mixed about whats happening.

I'm talking about the boxed set containing DVDs and CDs. It usually costs just under 60 bucks. Donald D. Henson, Managing Director West El Paso Information Network The "Non-Initiation of Force Principle" Rules

I do know what you mean - but what was 'Suse' and how we 'get it' is now changing. Lets suppose the new iso's say available to download on release day becomes more popular and replaces the current way most of us get suse. I'm still waiting for 10.2.

The downloadable OSS version will not be the same as the boxed version, there is added value, in commercial, non-open source packages

The most recent news release I can find from Novell is here: http://www.novell.com/news/press/item.jsp?contentid=a2e8d2eb89036010VgnVCM10...
Saw that article earlier. It kinda sounds like they're not going to sell direct anymore. Donald D. Henson, Managing Director West El Paso Information Network The "Non-Initiation of Force Principle" Rules Darryl Gregorash wrote:

Try below, similar. Also it doesn't say they wont do any sales from the suse.com site so , as they say, "stay tuned".

Available in October, SUSE Linux 10.0 will be offered globally via all major retail channels at the suggested retail price of $59/Euros (€) 59, a 44 percent price improvement over earlier versions. For a list of resellers and distributors, please visit: http://www.novell.com/products/linuxprofessional/resellers/index.html. For more information on the openSUSE project, please visit http://www.opensuse.org.
The full featured desktop delivered in SUSE Linux 10.0 includes the newest version of the popular Firefox Web browser; the latest version of the Windows-compatible OpenOffice.org 2.0 office suite; email and instant messaging clients; graphics creation, editing, and management applications; plus important security tools like spam blockers, anti-virus software and an integrated firewall. Among the numerous new and updated features are the Beagle desktop search engine and Amarok with MP3 support out of the box.
“As this release of SUSE Linux 10.0 shows, Novell continues to extend its vision for its business and retail products,” said Chris Ingle, group consultant at IDC. “SUSE Linux has always had one of the fullest feature sets of any distribution. While these features are valued by customers, Novell's focus on ease of use aims to make the distribution accessible to a wider user base. Key to Novell’s success with future product releases will be building a community at openSUSE.org which works well with the existing Linux community and drives wider adoption of open source products.”
SUSE Linux 10.0 also will preview select advanced technologies for the Linux enthusiast, such as Xen virtualization and iFolder for file access anywhere, that will be available in future versions of Novell's enterprise Linux products.

I trust a minor sales pitch can't be off topic on the Suse-e list ;-) -- j registered linux user #363029

The article included a link to their list of SuSE retailers. The first three that I tried for my area (Ottawa, Canada) were defective. One was a broken link in Quebec (preferable for ordering because then I don't pay Ontario sales tax...), another was a defunct Ottawa business that formerly sold discount/overstock books, software, etc., and the third was for a book retailer that doesn't list software in its stock. They also, conspicuously, did _not_ list Camelot.ca which is a booming business in downtown Montreal and ships for free across Canada. I bought my last four or five SuSE boxes from them. Based on that (admittedly small) sampling, I wonder if Novell/SuSE is any better represented in the rest of the world, at the retail level. I'll bet Microsoft would do a better job of policing its distribution network... which is just one factor that explains the relative wealth of both companies. I don't want to knock Novell - I'd just like them to wake up and tighten up, so that they (and SuSE) enjoy continued success. Letting your reseller network go to seed is not good marketing practice. In fact, they do list Camelot, but it isn't listed in the section that breaks down by state/province -- look further up the page. I sent feedback to Novell about the same complaint you have, that the businesses listed need to be checked for accuracy, as well as whether or not they even offer SuSE Linux for sale. I don't recall if any of the others list it, or if they do, it's academic pricing only (eg. U of Toronto, "call for student pricing"). IMO, you can't go wrong with Camelot, so the rest of them can go pound sand as far as I am concerned :-)

'Zat's 'cause we're supposed to order through womeone who deals with "microsomething" the big importer here and stateside. {Problem is they are so heavy handed with their retail slaves (they treat them more like this than partners) that no-one wants to special order them down this way. I have no problems using Camelot, but they get stuff a good month or two after stateside release. :( Mike
