[opensuse] Drive not visible
I have two hard drives. The first has suddenly become invisible. I have booted Knoppix. I have taken the hard drive out of the system, plugged it into a usb external case, and plugged it into my laptop (which is running XP but has been modified to see ext3 file systems). I have run spinrite. Nothing sees this drive. The drive does spinup but for some reason is not registering as being there. Throughout all this the second hard drive mounts as hdb and both hard drives are set up as cable select. Any thought on what I need to do to get this drive readable again? Booted Knoppix?! What that might have with drive failure? If it failed.

Spinrite from grc.com? Did drive show signs of failure before?
The drive does spinup but for some reason is not registering as being there.
1) Wrong jumper settings. 2) Wrong cable - for cable select is used different type of cable.
Throughout all this the second hard drive mounts as hdb and both hard drives are set up as cable select.
Where is drive now? Where is not recognized? In external case or in computer. Did you changed jumpers when it was installed in external case?
Any thought on what I need to do to get this drive readable again?

It wouldn't be totally unusual for the drive electronics to fail while the drive motor still runs. It sounds to me like the drive is just dead. Nothing lasts forever. You might also have a trashed partition table, but only fdisk or sum such will tell you that. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
