[opensuse] Configuring Evolution
Hi, Can anybody please tell me, how to configure Evolution Mail (SuSE 10.1 x86_64) for GMail. I am unable to do port settings for SMTP and POP. Thanks in advance - Bikram -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Remove the account from evolution and start again. First go to the gmail setting and check that under "POP download. 1)Status" it says, in green letters, "POP is enabled". If this is not so, then enable it and don't forget to click on "save changes". Then go back to Evolution and create the account from zero. 1) Name: <your name> Email Address: razorpeak@gmail.com 2) Receiving mail: Server type: POP Server: pop.gmail.com username: razorpeak Use Secure Connection: SSL encryption Authentication Type: Password (click "check for supported types" and you should see that the other possibilities are struck out) 3) Sending mail: Server type: SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com CHECK "Server requires authentication" Use Secure Connection: SSL encryption Authentication Type: Login (click "check for supported types" and you should see that the other possibilities except PLAIN are struck out) username: razorpeak Save that configuration and you should be able to send and receive mail from Evolution with your email account. Make sure that the account is "enabled" in evolution. Go to Edit/Preferences and you will see a checkbox in the "enabled" column before the name of the account you've just created. That checkbox should be selected. I've just done this whole procedure with this account (which I didn't have set up to download), and it worked perfectly. Hope it helps. g -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

3) Sending mail: Server type: SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com CHECK "Server requires authentication" Use Secure Connection: SSL encryption Authentication Type: Login (click "check for supported types" and you should see that the other possibilities except PLAIN are struck out) username: razorpeak
note that if one wants to see his 'sent' mail in gmail, do not use gmail's 'smtp.gmail.com', use your own provider and your gmail return address. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 OpenSUSE Linux http://en.opensuse.org/ Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I have started as you said... but
2) Receiving mail:
Server type: POP
Server: pop.gmail.com
username: razorpeak
Use Secure Connection: SSL encryption
Authentication Type: Password (click "check for supported types"
and you should see that the other possibilities are struck out)
clicking "check for supported types" is opening a window "Quering
Server Please Wait" and it is never returning.
Please tell me what may went wrong.
Thanks of all your elaborate and detail help.

Hi,
It seems I finally got it worked. Thanks for all your help.
I want to share the information here: for any future reference to anybody.
Due to some reason Evolution is not issuing the second DNS query.
Which means, once pop.gmail.com is send to DNS for the IP address the
DNS is returning a re request for gmail-pop.l.google.com and address
1.0.0.0, DNS is expecting Evolution to query for
gmail-pop.l.google.com which will return the actual address
72.14.253.109.
Ping is working fine.
Same is the case for SMTP also only choice of Authentication type
PLAIN is returning with success.
I can not give the details of why, I don't have that much knowledge.
Ethereal, PING and the list helped me a lot. Thank you all for everything.

If I might help, the correct way to do this is as follows: 1/ make sure you have enabled pop access in your gmail account settings. 2/ Go to this page to read general instructions on how to set up your email client for pop access to gmail- http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13287&topic=1556 3/ Where it says you have to set a port number you can't do that in evolution, so you append the port number to the url instead like this - "pop.googlemail.com:995". Remove quotes and put that in your "incoming Mail (POP3) server setting box 4/ Similarly, where it says to set a port number for outgoing server you append the port number to the url like this - "smtp.googlemail.com:465". Contrary to what another user said, you _can_ use gmail as your outgoing server. You can choose your provider instead, but gmail works as your outgoing too if you want instead. 5/ Finally, make sure you use all the security protocols that the gmail help says or it won't work.
Same is the case for SMTP also only choice of Authentication type PLAIN is returning with success.
If you set the port numbers as I said then you will be able to use it with the proper security protocols and not use PLAIN. Gavin. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Correction: I did not say that you could _not_ use gmail as your outgoing server. since we are in the topic... if Evolution crash (or the Internet connection fails) while you are downloading an email from gmail.. the next time you restart evolution, it won't recover/download those emails. any solution? at the moment i have to go to gmail and read those mails using the browser.
