Hello, I'm just curious. Is it possible to make a patch cd from the downloaded patches from YOU so that I can install them on another computer? What is to be done with the delta patches? Thank you, Mrugesh Karnik Registered Linux User #375243

Yes, you have to create the directory structure for it with the files under their respective directories, the same as they are laid out on the site, e.g barrabas:/ftp/jan05 # l -R /ISO/i386/update/9.1/ /ISO/i386/update/9.1/: total 0 drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 120 2004-11-08 13:56 ./ drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 72 2004-11-08 13:56 ../ drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 2004-08-10 13:29 patches/ drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 72 2004-11-08 13:56 rpm/ drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 2004-08-10 13:39 scripts/ /ISO/i386/update/9.1/patches: total 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 2004-08-10 13:29 ./ drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 120 2004-11-08 13:56 ../ /ISO/i386/update/9.1/rpm: total 0 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 72 2004-11-08 13:56 ./ drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 120 2004-11-08 13:56 ../ drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 2004-08-10 13:54 i586/ /ISO/i386/update/9.1/rpm/i586: total 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 2004-08-10 13:54 ./ drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 72 2004-11-08 13:56 ../ /ISO/i386/update/9.1/scripts: total 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 2004-08-10 13:39 ./ drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 120 2004-11-08 13:56 ../ The CD has to have the /i386/ as its root directory. In the example above I removed the files so as to avoid clutter here. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Yes, you have to create the directory structure for it with the files under their respective directories, the same as they are laid out on the site, e.g barrabas:/ftp/jan05 # l -R /ISO/i386/update/9.1/ <SNIP>
Just for interest's sake, would it not be possible to burn the CD according to the dir structure in var/xxx/xxx and then mount the CD/DVD to appear in that dir so that YOU believes the patches/updates are already d/l and just awaiting installation? -- ..."Yogi" CH Namasté Yoga Studio

Possible, once the CD has the structure /i386/updates/9.2/. Originally I downloaded all the patches to one directory and just burned them on to CD, but it was looking for the structure as seen on the site. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Of course. For example, as I use a modem, I download the big updates, like the kernel, in fractions over several days, with wget. When finished, I move the file to /var.... and fire up YOU, which runs as usuall, but skips the act of downloading files already there, and installs them happily. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

I had never tried that but I surmised that it must be at least theoretically possible. Thanks. :-) -- ..."Yogi" CH Namasté Yoga Studio

Of course.
I export "/var/lib/YaST2/you/mnt" from the server and mount it on the clients. This way nothing needs to be downloaded more than once for all

I believe /var/lib/YaST2/you/mnt/i386/update/9.1/patches/ _might_ be downloaded again. At least, it tries. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
So, what would be the best solution? How should I keep the directory structure on the CD? Btw, what's that "PatchCD" section in YaST? (Stupid question? Well, I haven't even once had a look at it.....) What to do with the delta patches? I want to be able to install from the cd directly and not by copying the files to the update directory in /var Thank You. Mrugesh Karnik Registered Linux User #375243

Just reproduce on the cd the directory structure of the ftp server from mnt below. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

I'm not sure, how the patch-CD for 9.2 would differ, but this page was quite useful for me (riding 9.1): http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/09/fhassel_patchcd.html Pelibali

Hi, Please note, that the above page I mentioned previously got updated recently to the newest SUSE 9.2 release, but _only_ in it's the GERMAN-version! That could be still useful: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/de/2004/09/fhassel_patchcd.html Pelibali
