It's probably coming from the BIOS, but I'm not sure why it's not telling you more specific data about *which* disk is failing. What's important here is that you have a disk going South QUICKLY. Get the diagnostic tools from every manufacturer that has a disk in your computer, run 'em, and start making a warranty claim. GET YOUR DATA OFF THAT DISK first, though. :) -- -=|JP|=- Need a good geek? I'm unemployed! Where in the boot sequence do you see the message? Do you see it before the LILO prompt? Do you see it after the kernel has been decompressed? -- David Benfell, LCP benfell@parts-unknown.org --- Resume available at http://www.parts-unknown.org/resume.html

I get the same thing on a 5.1Gb drive, right before the memory test in POST - it happens on a Compaq machine., but not on my "home built" one. I believe it's generated by some intelligence on the hard drive, or else in the bios of the machine - I've been running with this error for 18 months and apart from it being a PITA with I reboot (you have to press F1 to continue), it seems fine. Jon P.S. SMART is (I think) a Seagate technology for predictive drive maintenance.
