[opensuse] Blocked acces to opensuse web site
I am not able to access the "www.opensuse.org" web site. Using "www.opensuse.org" only produces, after a long delay, a "Problem loading page" message. I am using opensuse 11.1 If I change to another computer on my nat local network which is running opensuse 10.2 my access is ok. Neither computers has any problems with access to say "www.w3.org" or many others. Does "www.opensuse.org" web server have any blocking based on say mac address? What mailing list is most appropriate to ask this question on? Regards Sinclair -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

That's not possible to do ... mac addresses are not known to hosts outside your own network. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

it won't be of much help, but if things are as you're advertising (NAT'd local network, computer A works fine, B does not), then it's no sort of block (all the website gets at the end is your outside NAT IP, so it's the same for either machine. the MAC is unknown outside your LAN). are you sure the configs for the 2 machines are the same? e.g. name servers, order and domain searches in /etc/resolv.conf, entries in /etc/hosts, and how /etc/nsswitch.conf looks? no idea if this is the right mailing list, but it seems like a reasonable starting place. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

MAC addresses are valid only on the local network. When your packet passes through a router, your MAC address is stripped off and replaced by one from the other side of the router. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Ater kind help, I deciding to see if the problem lay with network configuration on computer " B", I compared "A" and "B" and can only remember that I dis-allowed ipv6 address on "B", the failing machine. That computer was then ,when tested, able to reach the pages of www.opensuse.org. I assume the change was the solution but still harbour a suspision that something has changed at the web site. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

if you -really- believe that, then it's easy enough to check -- turn ipv6 back on and try to connect again. but since a. you DID change something and it started working b. you always had one machine on the same NAT'd network that could get there. c. nobody else had issues similar to yours. d. large websites don't just randomly make changes to block people. at least not normally. I'd bet the farm on your configuration differences being the problem. -- Even the Magic 8 ball has an opinion on email clients: Outlook not so good. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks again. I was so delighted with the effect of turning ipv6 support off that I didnt think of doing your suggested test. I have turned on ipv6 and again I could not get www.opensuse.org. Most interesting. But i am now turning it off! I have no idea why this should have an effect. DNS problem, usually. Change your setup to use 8.8.8.8 instead and try again. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
