I had problems upgrading Ghostscript on SuSE 7.0 - so I gave CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) and it's lightyears ahead of GS - configuration via the browser of your choice, with dedicated drivers to use with GIMP (REEEAALLY COOL!!!)

I am taking a look at your suggestion... But, the way I read the web page, you only get a 45 day demo use. Does CUPS have all this without ESP Pro frontend? I am using the demo now. Will it die?
