[opensuse] Installing Firefox 3
Hello I have some trouble with Firefox 2 (crashes and is dead slow, 10 sec to alt-tab from another application isn't strange) so I would like to update to Firefox 3. However yast doesn't have firefox 3 yet so I neet to get it from mozilla. They provide me with a tar.bz2 file. Then I hit a brick wall: there is no install, make won't do anything with the files in it and if I add it as a repository there is nothing there. I usually install with yast from the common repositories, so i do not know how to install otherwise. I know some of you already installed 3, so could you please tell me how to do it? I have some experience in console. Thanks Neil -- There are two kinds of people: 1. People who start their arrays with 1. 1. People who start their arrays with 0. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

With the tarball you can just unpack it. It will create a directory called "firefox" where you unpacked it, and in there you will have a script called "firefox" which you can run to start the browser But there are rpms available as well: For 10.3 you can use http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_10.3/ as a repository for it For 11.0, just run an online update to get the final version Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Thanks for responding so quicky, but I still have some trouble:
The script opens firefox 2 on my system
When I download
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_10.3/i586/Mozilla...,
and let it use install software, software management starts and
closes, but nothing seems to happen.
Thanks for your time

That should only happen if firefox2 is already running. The script will look for running versions of firefox and if there are any, it will use them. So make sure firefox is properly shut down before running that script
When I download http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_10.3/i586/Mozill aFirefox-3.0-1.1.i586.rpm, and let it use install software, software management starts and closes, but nothing seems to happen.
Just add http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_10.3/ as a repository in YaST and install it through the normal software management module Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I think you have to type ./firefox if you're in the working directory for firefox 3, or else include the complete path, e.g. /opt/firefox3/firefox (if you've installed in /opt/firefox3). If you just type firefox, the os will most likely run /usr/bin/firefox, which should be a symbolic link to the original firefox. You might want to change that. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Thanks. I got it working from the downloaded an untarred directory
(forgot to close all instances of firefox).
The RPM didn't work, and the build crashed my software install.
10.3 crashes a lot on my system, when I have time i'll try and check
whether it's a hardware problem (I still use an asus p4p800 with a 2.8
ghz P4). I haven't been to nice to my pc, so that's a viable option
Now I can use FF3 and my entiere system seems faster.

The online update won't look at it, because there are no patchinfo files, so you have to check it yourself manually Just do "zypper lu -t package" to see what's available across all your repos, or, to just get the updates from one repository, do "zypper lu -t package -r <repository number>" where the number is the one listed on the left when you do "zypper sl" Or do it through the YaST GUI :) Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I suspected as much. Thanks for clearing this up. In the case of Firefox, checking the repo manually is normally not a problem. So many other machines get firefox updates I usually know when one is out. This may not be the case for smaller less used packages. I any case I know what to do now. Does anyone know if opensuse plans on adding Firefox 3 to opensse 10.3, or leaving it at 2.x? Hi Basil, I believe I read the messages, but perhaps I missed something. My last question was not about updates for now, I understand that if I'm using 10.3 and update to Firefox 3 from the opensuse/mozilla repo, I will have to keep checking that repo periodically for updates. Understood. What my last question was does anyone know if opensuse plans on upgrading their base Firefox package from 2.x to 3.x for 10.3 in the coming months, similar to what they did from Firefox 1.5 to 2.0 on Suse 10.0 eventually (although that was due to security issues IIRC). Sorry Jim, but you have me absolutely confused :-) . If you are running 10.3 and are using the version of FF installed by openSUSE (ie, not a "roll-your-own" downloaded from Mozilla.org) and you have YaST2 setup up to do your upgrades, or have smart setup to do same, then -- as is indicated in the text above as written by someone other than me -- you will have your FF upgraded by YaST2 (or whatever) with openSUSE 10.3 installed. If you are asking, indirectly, if FF will continue to be upgraded while you are running openSUSE 10.3 then as far as I know the answer is YES. Sorry if I'm confusing this. From what I understood from the above replies, when running 10.3, to upgrade Firefox to v.3, I added the opensuse/repo as listed. But the reply says that YOU updates will not be pushed out for this version of FF (on 10.3), I'll have to check that repo periodically to get further (future) firefox updates. No problem there, I just need to remember to manually update firefox from now on. If I didn't add that repo to upgrade to FF 3, I would still have FF2.x and updates for that version would automatically be pushed out by YOU. My second question was I was simply wonder if opensue would push out FF3 to all users at some point in the (near) future, thus giving all the automatic updates for FF3 as well. Once I get my machines updated to opensuse 11.0 it won't matter, they already pushed FF3 out to that via online update.
