Hi! I have to choose a laptop for my job. I will use it as a "replacement" to a desktop computer: I will develop on it, run servers, ... I wonder if there is a difference in quality (other than max resolution) between a 15" Super XGA+ display and a 15" Ultra XGA display. Also do you think a Dell Inspiron 8000 (1 GHz, ...) is a good choice? Will I get any issue to install Linux? Thanks for the info! Patrick
Patrick, I run SuSE on my Dell Inspiron 7500 with the Super XGA (1400x1050) resolution. Things look really good at that resolution! SuSE 7.0 had the propert X configuration for that display setting. I don't know about the Ultra XGA display X settings, however. Everything runs great on my laptop: I have a 25GB drive in it, and I use GRUB to multi-boot W2K and Linux, as the 7.0 distro LILO could not boot my Linux image as it was set up on the hard disk. I have _not_ yet tried to upgrade my laptop to SuSE 7.1, however, so I don't know how smoothly that installation will go. I run many things on the laptop under Linux: Tomcat, Oracle 8i, and Apache (of course) and all this works just fine. hth, -ronc On Saturday 26 May 2001 19:18, you wrote:

Hi Patrick,
I wonder if there is a difference in quality (other than max resolution) between a 15" Super XGA+ display and a 15" Ultra XGA display.
I have the 14" normal XGA in a Dell Inspiron 5000e, and let me say it is extremely nice, so I think the Super XGA will also yield great results. One thing I should note is if you do not plan to run the screen at the max resolution, you may be happier with the lower-res model. The thing with laptop screens is that it has to interpolate, IIRC, for any resolution _below_ the heighest, since the pixels are in hardwired locations. As a result, a monitor made for say 1400x1200 resolution will look slightly blurry at 1024x768 for instance. I have noticed this while working on other people's laptops so just something to keep in mind. YMMV.

YES! A very good choice - Dell makes great laptops and great prices.
I get any issue to install Linux?
To the best of my knowledge, the i8k can even have RH Linux preinstalled, so you shouldn't have any trouble. My 5000e's only problem is the Winmodem, which I haven't really cared enough about to even try to get working under Linux (I have a cable modem). Other than that, everything - sound card, video card, PC Card/Card Bus, etc. all works quite well in Linux I have found. If you have more specific questions, you may find the linux-dell-laptops@yahoogroups.com mailing list helpful. They would be able to tell you information specifically related to the i8k, and not based on my experience with the i5ke. -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Hi all, I have a Compaq Armada M700, running very well under SuSE 7.1 and before under Debian 2.2r2. Planing to run Apple Titanium under SuSE PPC or Deian 2.2R3. I've already seen it under Debian, great. Yvon Pablo Sau wrote:
