[SLE] problems with KVM switches.. losing mouse control on 8.0
I am using a multiple servers with a KVM switch and I find that I lose control of my mouse as I return back to the SUSE 8.0 KDE. Are any you experiencing the same thing. I have tried other mice and different KVM switches. -I am using a Belkin KVM switch with hot key functionality for changing monitors. -I am using PS/2 mice The only way I can stablize the mouse is if I return to YAST 2 and try to re-configure the mouse when it is a problem... Otherwise I have been rebooting to get the mouse stability.

sounds more like a PS/2 port problem than a mouse problem. There is a power issue with PS/2 mice (you cannot hotplug PS/2 mice) if you have a bad KVM it will look to the machine you're connecting to as if you are hot-plugging ps/2 mice, which is bad. Is your KVM switch build for PS/2, or is it serial, and do you use a serial->ps/2 converter. If it's the latter, than you have found your problem. Alternatively, try using a PS2->serial converter to plug your PS/2 cable (from the KVM) into the serial port of your box (and tell it to use /dev/ttyS0 iso /dev/psaux Gerhard, <@jasongeo.com> == The Acoustic Motorbiker == -- __O If your watch is wound, wound to run, it will =`\<, If your time is due, due to come, it will (=)/(=) Living this life, is like trying to learn latin in a chines firedrill
I have a similar issue. I have a Belkin SOHO 4 port ps/2 KVM. I have four machines hooked up to it, 1&2 are dell servers, 3 is a dell workstation, and 4 is an IBM Thinkpad (all run Suse 7.2 and 7.3) (will run 8.0 later this week hopefully :). When I switch to the servers, I lose control of my mouse, switching to tty1, and then back to tty7 cures the problems for the server. The workstation functions perfectly, and the only problem with the thinkpad is that for the life of me I can't get the scroll wheel working. I talked with the folks at belkin, and they said that the main issue is that the kvm switch takes the mouse and emulates a standard mouse to each of the connected machines. So the issue may very well be driver/port compatibility to whatever type of emulation Belkin uses. They said they had a solution for winders boxes, and that was to load their own mouse driver. But they didn't have much of a clue about a solution for other os's. Ron On Saturday 15 April 2000 02:28, Jon San Juan wrote:

This seems to be an *intermittant* problem for me, too. I usually just ctrl-alt-Fx before I switch from my linux box, and alt-F7 when I switch back., and everything is fine. This problem also existed with 7.2, depending on which machine I happened to be switching to, and what it was running. Switching to and from Win98 is *usually* not a problem. I am not using a Belkin, just a cheesemaster generic KVM switch. Sorry I'm not more help. Tom -- TRBishop tb64710@alltel.net SuSE 7.3 Pro

I've been using a Linksys 4 port KVM at home to switch between my SuSE desktop, SuSE laptop (when I decide to plug it in), and my Red Hat Alpha. The only problem I had is with the laptop, which sometimes decides to switch back to the touch pad. On 29 Apr 2002 at 14:26, Michael Nelson wrote:

I have the same problem with SuSE 7.1. Intermittant, but some days are worse than others... The funny thing is that my RH 6.2 machine never has these problems. It just keep on going and that is freaking me out.... I have the Belkin Omni View SE 4-port(using 2 banks). And that kvm seem to work without the power supply. But I lost the mouse more often like that. Speaking of the devil, I just lost my mouse typing these few lines... Loosing the mouse without switching channel/bank are quite annoying. Especially when the X-server once and a while restarts while doing the tty1 -> tty7 thing... Cheers, Magnus Thomas Bishop wrote:

Dear Magnus Hagebris and List, I also use two banks of Belkin Omni View SE4-port KVM switches. My first bank is quite stable and has no problem with losing mouse control. However, the second bank (one SuSE Box running 6.4/7.1/7.2/7.3/8.0 and one Win98 box) is quite unpredictable. Some days it works fine and other days looses mouse control after only a few minutes. Both boxes on the second bank lose mouse control, though not always at the same time, so OS does not seem to be the primary issue. When the second bank boxes lose mouse control, I sometimes run a separate mouse directly to one of the boxes until the system settles down. Such is life in the Belkin world I guess. :--) Respectfully, Ken Becker ---------- Original Text ---------- From: Magnus Hagebris <mhagebris@ipdynamics.com>, on 4/29/02 3:08 PM: I have the same problem with SuSE 7.1. This is what I have Bank 0:1 Suse 7.2 (No X, so I do not know about the mouse) Bank 0:2 RH 6.2 - "Never" drops the mouse Bank 0:3 Suse 7.1 - Drops the mouse often Bank 0:4 XP - "Never" drops the mouse Bank 1:1-3 Suse 7.1 All drops the mouse often To me it seems like SuSE 7.1 has tougher time to handle the mouse?!?!?!?! Or maybe it is something with KDE!!! I have dual boot on the XP box, with SuSE 8.0(KDE3) and it seems like that is not dropping the mouse. At least the few times I been running it... Let's face it... The Belkin KVM is a piece of crap ;) Cheers, Magnus Kenneth J. Becker wrote:

Hey, I just "solve" the problem. Or actually I RTFM... This is what you should do: http://web.belkin.com/support/faq_qa.asp?pid=190&cid=1 I used the old PS/2 driver with an old mouse. So I changes the mouse to a new one (supporting the IMPS/2) and I'm now happilly switching... Cheers, Magnus
