Not an HTML dependency. Your missing a video codec. HTML doesn't "play" the video. Depending on the video format you have to have the codecs to decode it.

Well, FF has to render the page. If the page includes a video and FF alone can't play it, it has to give an error and say what is missing. I tried that page. Normally when you install software, it installs any libraries etc that it is likely to require. Mplayer for example has installed video decoders, but it may be that I only ever use it for audio. So my reasoning was that it should install anything that it is ever likely to require. Of course I could be wrong.

I don't think you've told us what error message you saw?

The error message was something like "this content does not seem to be working, please try later". It does not give any indication of the problem. If he wishes in this conditions to play html5 he will have to go to "big mac menue" on the left side of the bar, choose supplemental components, - plugins - set flash to "never start" and reload the page. When this thread started, the BBC test page was working for me. But now it isn't! Nor other BBC videos :( Though all three of the quirksmode videos still work, as does youtube. So it's definitely a BBC problem. What I have noticed is that if you right-click on the misbehaving BBC video, it pops up a panel with some error diagnostics. Sadly, it seems to be one of those annoying windows that won't let you select the text! The pointer changes to a hand but doesn't seem to let you do anything. There's some sort of dotted number - a version number perhaps? There's a list of errors, like bitrate and dimensions. And there's "Error: 4999" So I hope that somebody at the BBC is reading this. Apparently they weren't :( But I eventually bothered reporting the error to the BBC and was pleasantly surprised to receive an interested reply. One week later they have tracked the problem down to a bug in NoScript that was blocking their CDNs but not advising users. As of NoScript 5.0.2 that problem is fixed and BBC videos works again. I have "FlashBlock" addon enabled, which by default also blocks html5. I have to manually disable FB by clicking on the icon at the center of the video window. What happened to me was first it said I needed to install flash, then after a short delay, it changed to "this content doesn't seem to be working".

You have to be opted in to html5 to test it. It says if you are on the right hand side. If you are not, it will use flash. You can clear out cookies and rerun to be opted in I think.
