This video wasn't working for me in seamonkey or firefox, until I enabled the Packman repository and installed Mplayer. So I think there are some dependencies which are not satisfied by installing firefox. But I think I read that firefox downloads some things on the fly for html5, so maybe it should check for libraries too?

Firefox doesn't load codecs. Video players do.

Well, FF has to render the page. If the page includes a video and FF alone can't play it, it has to give an error and say what is missing.
I tried that page. It asks to opt in to html5 or do nothing to use flash. With html5 it plays fine.
The process list doesn't mention mplayer.

If he has flashplayer installed on his system and set to "always ask befor starting the plugin" the automatic or manual selection of html5 in FF will not work. If he wishes in this conditions to play html5 he will have to go to "big mac menue" on the left side of the bar, choose supplemental components, - plugins - set flash to "never start" and reload the page. Now it should work as expected.

Normally when you install software, it installs any libraries etc that it is likely to require. Mplayer for example has installed video decoders, but it may be that I only ever use it for audio. So my reasoning was that it should install anything that it is ever likely to require. Of course I could be wrong.
I don't think you've told us what error message you saw?
The error message was something like "this content does not seem to be working, please try later". It does not give any indication of the problem. Trying later only worked because later I installed mplayer. :)

What happened to me was first it said I needed to install flash, then after a short delay, it changed to "this content doesn't seem to be working".
You have to be opted in to html5 to test it. It says if you are on the right hand side. If you are not, it will use flash. You can clear out cookies and rerun to be opted in I think.

I think that whatever is missing must be proprietary software, so it cannot be installed when Firefox is installed. But the Cisco H.264 plugin is downloaded at run time I think. So maybe that should get the codecs too? I have no idea how it would work. I was not expecting that Firefox called mplayer, but that Firefox uses some library which was installed when I installed mplayer. Mplayer comes from Packman which contains non-free software.
Perhaps the question I should have asked is: If someone installs opensuse and firefox, and then goes to the bbc.co.uk/html5 video, how will they know why it is not working and what they are supposed to do to get it working?

I have "FlashBlock" addon enabled, which by default also blocks html5. I have to manually disable FB by clicking on the icon at the center of the video window. If i wait doing nothing, the page defaults to flash and the blocker blocks it.

So If you have other plugins installed, try to simply open this with all plugins deactivated to see if one of them interfears.

LOL, today I am dyslexic for sure. Sorry, interfere not intefear, I fear. They may also "use" trackers.
Finally you can also uninstall the flashplayer to see if it plays. If it does, you may reflect if you really need this shitty piece of software.....

When this thread started, the BBC test page was working for me.
But now it isn't! Nor other BBC videos :( Though all three of the quirksmode videos still work, as does youtube. So it's definitely a BBC problem.
What I have noticed is that if you right-click on the misbehaving BBC video, it pops up a panel with some error diagnostics. Sadly, it seems to be one of those annoying windows that won't let you select the text! The pointer changes to a hand but doesn't seem to let you do anything.
There's some sort of dotted number - a version number perhaps? There's a list of errors, like bitrate and dimensions. And there's "Error: 4999"
So I hope that somebody at the BBC is reading this.

I can't guarantee anything but it seems that some time back on one list or another it was said that BBC blocked it's video for anyone not in the country. To view you had to spoof your location somehow.

Apparently they weren't :(
But I eventually bothered reporting the error to the BBC and was pleasantly surprised to receive an interested reply. One week later they have tracked the problem down to a bug in NoScript that was blocking their CDNs but not advising users. As of NoScript 5.0.2 that problem is fixed and BBC videos works again.

This video wasn't working for me in seamonkey or firefox, until I enabled the Packman repository and installed Mplayer. So I think there are some dependencies which are not satisfied by installing firefox. But I think I read that firefox downloads some things on the fly for html5, so maybe it should check for libraries too?
I found that installing mplayer doesn't always work. The libavcodec57 has to come from Packman. So first:
sudo zypper -v install libavcodec57
See which version is installed, and it will say if there is another version in Packman. If there is, install it:
sudo zypper -v install libavcodec57-3.3-6.11.1.x86_64
(For the benefit of anyone who searches, including me).
