Re: [SLE] Scanning with Epson multifunction cx6400 Suse 9.1
Thanks for your good suggestions. I have always been able to use the printer, but have not been able to get the scan to work. I'll follow up on your leads and report back anything that works. Thanks again. On Wed, 29 Dec 2004 09:17:53 -0800, Russ <russbucket@centurytel.net> wrote:

Any suggestions on how to get the scanning function to work?
I believe I have the epson.conf and dll.conf files configured properly.
The scanner is connected via usb (libusb).
sane-find-scanner locates the scanner.
scanimage -L also finds the scanner but identifies it as an epson PX-A650 flatbed scanner.
From both the command line and xsane, when I try to scan I get an error message "invalid argument"
I get the same result running as root or in a user account.
Any and all suggestions and comments will be appreciated.
Im on SUSE 9.1 Pro and had simular problems with a CX6600. I found several documents that helped above and beyond the documents on the Epson website ( www.epkowa.co.jp/ ).
Look at: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/10/jsmeix_scanner-setup-92.html [this helped with iscan for the scanner function]
the www.epkowa site had rpm packages and instructions for the printer. I also saw packages for the CX6400 their.
http://khk.net/sane/libusb.html also had some documents that gave hints. I never got sane to work but my printer prints, copies and scans. I use GIMP to scan. if you want sane look at http://khk.net/sane/libusb.html.
I had to modify, resmgr.conf. I added access for usb devices. # By Default, grant access to all usb devices #except for HID and Hub devices exclude usb:class=3 desktop exclude usb:class=9 desktop add usb:any desktop
this goes right after #Allow access for pilot utils add /dev/pilot desktop
Modified sane-hardcoded.usermap and usb.usermap to add the info for CX6600 (this is the manufacture ID info available from the epson site.
Also had to modify scanner permissions.
epkowa.conf had to have the manufactures code added after commenting out #usb /dev/usb/scanner0 CX 6600 example: usb 0x04b8 0x0813
epson.conf added following as last line: last line CX6600 example:usb 0x04b8 0x0813
modified dll.conf
last line epkowa and make sure epson is commented out.
Almost all of this info came from the above websites and responses to questions asked here and on the epkowa forum.
Hope this helps you. It took alwhile but the printer now works. I also found starting the printer after my system was running helps activate the functions. I occassional have to power the printer off/on if I start it before I boot my system. I have not tryed the printer with SAMBA since I just have the one system. Installing in windows was easier since the CX6600 is new and the SuSE 9.1 did not have the drivers, not sure if it hs CX6400 drivers/ I run my printer thru CUPS so that needed to be set up also. -- Russ

Russ I was able to get the scanner to work about ten minutes after reading your answer. the most helpful link was http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/10/jsmeix_scanner-setup-92.html. Maybe I missed it in my earlier travels, but this was the only document that discussed editing the resmgr.conf file. Before I even tried to edit that file, however, the article also mentioned that running the scaned daemon would accomplish the same result, so I started scaned and voila, success! I have never got around to installing the iscan rpm because it reports a missing dependancy -- sane-backends -- which of course is installed in my system, but since it's part of the sane rpm package I guess the iscan rpm does not detect it by that name. That's my guess. Is there any reason to install iscan if I can scan under xsane? Isn't iscan just another front end for sane? Again, thanks for your stellar help.
