Depends greatly on which IMAP server you are using (e.g., UW-IMAP, Courier, Cyrus, etc.). Jeffrey
Hi Jeffrey, I'm using cyrus-imapd, and want to make sure i never will lose my mails, so i need a completely safe backup-procedure. Thanks in advance for the help ! Franky. On Wednesday 29 December 2004 21:34, Jeffrey L. Taylor wrote:

Hi Jeffrey,
I'm using cyrus-imapd, and want to make sure i never will lose my mails, so i need a completely safe backup-procedure.
Thanks in advance for the help !
AFAIK, Cyrus uses its own format. You will need to check the Cyrus documentation if it has any support for hot backup or snapshot. Otherwise, shutdown the IMAP server, backup the files, and restart the server. For a shorted down time, shutdown the server, copy the files to disk, start the server, backup the copies. Jeffrey P.S. If Cyrus uses separate files for each message (like Maildir format), just backup the files. You might lose a message or two infrequently, but difficult backup procedures, in my experience, have reduced frequency. Better to backup early and often (and less than perfectly) then perfectly and infrequently.

Recently I also started using cyrus-imap and am looking for a backup concept. As my server is not heavily used I can afford to shut down cyrus for the duration of the backup, but I will probably end up using lvm snapshots for the backup to avoid the downtime. The important configuration info of my cyrus server is in a MySQL database, which can be easily backed up without hassle. Other than that, I run a shell script as a daily cron job which simply packs the mail spool into a tar file, and at the beginning of every week it rotates and gzips the tar file from the week before. This makes sure I have an archived copy of my mail messages, which is all I care about. Attributes of the mail messages (like the 'Seen' status) may be lost if I had to recover a server from the archived mail spool, but I prefer such a simple solution without necessity to stop the server. -- Andreas Philipp Noema Ltda. Hi Jeffrey, Sandy & Andreas, Thank you all 3 of you for the inspiring information. I think i will brew something together from your 3. Andreas, is it possible for you to send me this script ? I really don't have enough knowledge to make this my own, adapt, perhaps. Thanks again to you all ! Franky. On Wednesday 29 December 2004 23:36, Andreas Philipp wrote:
