VMWorkstation 4.0.5 and kernel 2.4.21-192 again
I have read all the messages related to problems getting VMWorkstation 4 running with the latest SuSE kernel. I tried the method related to using the vmware-any-any-update.tar.gz file When invoking the runme.pl script, it failed to compile the vmmon.o module with the error (among others) cannot exec cc1plus. Installing km_vmware source and running make -f Makefile.module from the /usr/src/kernel-modules/vmware directory also yields the cannot exec cc1plus error. switching to usr/src/kernel-modules/vmware/vmmon-only and running make yyields the same error. running make from usr/src/kernel-modules/vmware/vmnet-only yields no errors. This si a clean install of SuSE 9.0 pro. I have VmWorkstation 4.05 running under 2.4.21-166 on my old computer. This si a new computer, so I can always start over. Note that both computers use an AMD chip. Any ideas would be helpful. I am wondering if someone emails me vmmon.o and vmnet.o modules that work with their athlon 2.4.21-192 kernel whether I could use those? Mike -- Michael A. Excellent :) Installing the C++ compiler did the trick. I applied the vmware-any-any-53 patch, and VMWorkstation 4.0.5 works like a charm. Service pack 1 for XP Pro is installing right now. Many thanks. Mike -- Michael A. Coan Woodlawn Foundation 524 North Avenue, Suite 203 New Rochelle, NY 10801-3410 tel 914-632-3778 fax 914-632-5502

Can you give me a clue as to how that patch gets installed?? I downloaded: vmware-any-any-update53.tar.gz and it's not a tar.gz file at all. It seems to be a shell script without any instructions as to what to do with it..... -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S. so were you able to get VMWARE running under 2.4.21-192? Thanks Charles
It is running here just fine under 2.4.21-192-default. Alex. On Thu, 4 Mar 2004, Charles wrote:

What did you put for ### What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include] The path "/usr/src/linux/include" is not an existing directory. ### Were you even prompted for it? --Charles

Well, it is one here. Did you install the kernel source rpm?
Were you even prompted for it?
Sure. That comes up when you execute vmware-config.pl. Hope this helps, ALex.
I never fooled with the any-any patch. No, it looks like you don't have the package "kernel-source" installed on your system. You will need that in order to get its include files which in turn you need to compile the vmware sources. Best regards, Alex. On Thu, 4 Mar 2004, Charles wrote:

do you mean the any any patch? or something else?
Thanks for helping me with this :)

duh,,, that one.. Yea.. I have that one installed.. and it still asks me.. its odd, I even tell it /usr/src/linux-2.4.21-99/include or /usr/src/linux/include But I still get.. The path "/usr/src/linux/include" is an existing directory, but it does not contain at least one of these directories "linux", "asm", "net" as expected. --Charles
Okay. /usr/src/linux-2.4.21-99 is the original source version that came on your 9.0 discs. You obviously have to update those as well after you updated the binary kernel. I suggest you mosey over to YOU and get that kernel-source package updated so its version corresponds to your current binary, 2.4.21-192. Best regards, Alex. On Thu, 4 Mar 2004, Charles wrote:

Opps.. Sorry about that :p its been a long week.. I ran rcd and it updated and now the install goes through.. That did the trick... Thanks again! --Charles
Hi all, could anyone please post the links to download both the "any-any patch" and the 2.4.21-192-default kernel? I just found this http://ftp.leo.org/download/pub/comp/os/unix/linux/suse/suse/i386/update/9.0... but it seems to be the pre-compiled kernel, not the sources I need... TIA, Martin Alex Angerhofer wrote:

There is no need to reboot or disable the vmware services in YaST. Simply use /etc/init.d/vmware stop to shutdown vmware and install the any-any patch using steps 1, 4(a,b,c), 5, 6 (a,b,c), 7 and 9.

is there any other way to install VMware on SuSE 9.0, such as RPM or APT, than going through this patch/compile nightmare? :) Martin

It was easy once I got all my ducks in a row. I didnt even need the AnyAny patch.. just install and go.. --Charles

Well, you don't have to use the any-any patch. You can simply use the km_vmware package that came with SuSE 9.0. However, as I pointed out in my post to a similar thread a couple of weeks ago, you may not want to use the vmnet.o module that gets compiled from the km_vmware source. On the other hand you may have to use the vmmon.o module that originates from it rather than the one you get from the vmware distribution. It is quite confusing, especially if you don't regularly compile your own kernel and just expect it to work as shipped. Cheers, Alex.

SuSE used to supply the modules with the kernel updates, don't know why they do not anymore other than a licensing issue. But until they start to supply the modules again it is up to us to compile our own. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998 (5.2)
