As many of you have probably seen on /. by now, it looks like the new KDE3 final is coming really soon even though KDE themselves haven't announced it just yet (so don't go rushing out to get it, let the mirrors propagate first!). Anyway, I've recently installed apt4rpm and man, this is awesome. I've often thought about switching to Debian just for apt...but now that SuSE has it, I'm on board for good. My question is, when KDE3 is finally out and has hit the mirrors, will I be able to apt-get install it? Just for fun, I tried to install "kdebase3" with the -s option and I get: <begin snippet> Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. The following information may help to resolve the situation: Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies: (and a long list of dependencies) So, I guess my questions are, will I be able to install the new KDE3 this way? Is it just incomplete on the mirror right now? Why would this be an impossible situation as the msg above says? And why can't apt solve the dependency problems? Is it just a matter of this not being on the mirror? TIA, Bob
I've seen lots of references here and elsewhere to apt and the problems people are having in installing it. So what is apt? Paul
Apt-Get is a package management system that is used on debian linux systems. It has the ability, unlike RPM, to connect to a server and d'load the package you are looking for as well as any/all dependencies required, all with one command, and all automagically of course. It works only if the ftp server is setup in the required 'repository' fashion. Until recently it has been only available for the debian based linux', but a couple bright souls decided to port it to RPM based systems as well. Works like a charm for me. Check it out at www.apt4rpm.sourceforge.net On Wed, 2002-04-03 at 08:50, Paul W. Abrahams wrote:

The main Europe ftp.suse.com mirror ftp.gwdg.de has a APT directory for suse too. But i dunno how "stable" it is. Never used it, thanks to autorpm/YOU. Despite my post from earlier today, I can offer a success story of sorts. I installed the SuSE RPMs for apt4rpm at http://apt4rpm.sourceforge.net a few days ago. The only bump I've hit besides my problems installing KDE3 so far is that aptget wants to install something like 500 megs worth of base packages which are only a little different than the 7.3 cd rpms. I didn't go through with this...the FAQ at the apt4rpm site explains why this is so and how to get around it. Once I got that small annoyance out of the way, I found that apt4rpm works well and is powerful. It is nice to be able to type e.g. "apt-get install evolution" and have it install the program and any dependencies on its own. You can also use it to upgrade your entire system with simple commands like "apt-get upgrade". In this way, it seems like a good tool not only for install software, but also for keeping things up to date. For me, this program removes 90% of my frustration with installing Linux software, which is tracking down all of the dependencies, etc. Your mileage, as they always say, may vary. Read the FAQ and give it a shot! best regards, bob torres
Hello Henne, I used it (apt) to upgrade from suse-7.2 to 7.3. However, that was not with the gwdg mirror but with another one (internal company). The latter apt repository is made with the same software (apt4rpm) as that is used on gwdg. I use the gwdg mirror daily since 2 weeks, so I would say it is stable. Since a few hours it is now possible to apt-get kde3. I've apt-get kde3 successfully at 2 systems. The only thing to be done is to add the component kde3 to the /etc/apt/sources.list, execute apt-get update and do apt-get install kdebase3 e.g Details within this threat. It's great to see apt-get coming to SuSE, but is anyone having problems connecting to the gwdg apt repository? Everything installs smoothly, and I've duly edited sources.list to reflect the distribution; but, on trying to connect to gwdg's apt repository, it spews out a load of 404s; "Err http://ftp.gwdg.de base/base/pkglist.update 404 Not Found" It's not exactly surprising, since the actual files are at http://ftp.gwdg.de base/pkglist.update. I'm probably doing something daft here, but I can't see anything that is obviously fouling up what apt-get considers the top-level directory, and I'm too tired to make sense of /usr/bin/genbasedir. Sorry for wasting people's space with such a trivial one, but has anyone else had this sort of problem, and, if so, how did you fix it? cheers, Gideon.

Use ftp:// as your url protocol. It works here. (Though it seems to be the only part of apt that's working smoothly for me. ;-) )
