[S.u.S.E. Linux] NS communicator java crashes

good day all ... i just installed communicator 4.05 on my suse 5.1 laptop. whenever communicator tries to run java it crashes with a buss error. i ran the installer that came with it and set the MOZILLA_HOME environment variable. has anyone else seen this problem? -- -- michael -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

I've gotten that problem with 4.04... seems to only happen when I have color hogs running at the same time... On 15-Apr-98 Michael Galloway wrote:

It says in the documentation for 4.05 that it is buggy. Stick with 4.04 until they fix it. Michael Galloway wrote:

indeed, i went a grabbed a copy of navigator 4.04, same problem. it gets stranger yet. we were going to use the laptop for a demo, so i figured i'd just run netscape on a remote workstation and display to the linux box: same problem - crash when i hits java. -- michael Thus Spake Michael Lankton (satan@nfinity.com):

That is strange. I have export MOZILLA_HOME=/opt/netscape in my /etc/profile. I have never, ever had a problem. Java works fine in netscape. I don't know if perhaps there is a package you need installed (I thought netscape's java handling was independent of any other lib). Perhaps Bodo or someone more qualified can offer input. I have heard of people having problems with 4.05, but 4.03 and 4.04 have been ideal citizens on my box. Michael Galloway wrote:

4.05 works just fine. Put java40.jar in ~/.netscape/java/classes/ and it works A-OK. W.D.McKinney (Dee) -=- deem@wdm.com No claim to fame, just saved by Grace. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

i did some searching in the news archives of comp.os.linux.* and came across a farily large number of people having problems with linux/NS/java/libc. here is a description of the problem and a possible fix: <A HREF="http://members.ping.at/theofilu/netscape.html#detailed"><A HREF="http://members.ping.at/theofilu/netscape.html#detailed</A">http://members.ping.at/theofilu/netscape.html#detailed</A</A>> i've not had time to try the fix, but i plan to today sometime. i'll post an email when i do. -- michael Thus Spake Michael Galloway (mgx@spruce.lsd.ornl.gov):

good day all ... i solved it, by mere luck. i had my laptop running in 24bpp mode. i switched it to 8bpp and netscrape works. simple as that, but kind of scary. i'm glad i don't need 24bpp. -- michael o Thus Spake Michael Galloway (mgx@spruce.lsd.ornl.gov):
